It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Elya Meir Sorotzkin zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Tiferes Boruch of Springfield/Plainfield.

The rosh yeshiva battled illness for the last period and a name, Refoel, had been added. He was niftar this afternoon, Erev Shabbos.

Rav Sorotzkin was a son of Rav Boruch Sorotzkin zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland, and a son-in-law of Rav Shmuel Berenbaum zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Mirrer Yeshiva in Brooklyn.

Rav Sorotzkin was a beloved rosh yeshiva who devoted his life to harbotzas haTorah, to perpetuating the mesorah of his forebears, and to infusing his yeshiva and his talmidim with ahavas haTorah.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Rebbetzin Goldy Sorotzkin, and their wonderful family of children and grandchildren.

The levayah will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Yeshiva Tiferes Boruch of Springfield, located at 21 Rockview Avenue in North Plainfield, NJ. The aron will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah on Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

My son is a current talmid. The amount he shteiged by the R”Y is unreal. The R”Y gave shiur from his hospital bed when he had koach to speak. Terrible terrible loss for Klal Yisroel

  2. BORUCH DAIYAN HAEMES!!

When I was learning in the Mirrer Yeshiva in Brooklyn, there was a period when my seat in the Beis Medrosh was near his seat. To watch his how he was learning with his Chavrusos and Talmidim in his Chabura — he was almost always standing — to see the strength and the energy and the power and the forcefulness that was in his speech to them, was literally astounding!! Yes, I must agree, it is a terrible, terrible loss for Klal Yisroel.

  3. BORUCH DAIYAN HAEMES!!

I well remember the when the father, ZT’L, was Nifter. For a short time, I had been Davening at the Telz Alumini Minyan in Boro Park. When we had just completed the Ma’ariv of Motzoei Shabbos, (I did not hear it, but, evidently) the pay telephone in the little entrance way at the front of the Beis Medrosh rang, and thus several of the Mispallim went into that entrance way. Suddenly, there was a big tumult in them and, Yibodel L’Chaim Tovim V’Aruchim, the Rav of the Shul, Rav Yaakov Horowitz, Sh’lita, quickly came from there through the Beis Medrosh — TEARS WERE STREAKING DOWN HIS FACE!! I asked someone what had happened, and he replied: “Rav Boruch was Nifter.”

A bit later, I heard one of the people there relate that the evening before, Rav Chaim Stein, ZT’L, who was then in Boro Park, at one point remarked to the person he was sitting next to, that he suddenly had this horrid painful feeling.

The next day (Sunday), the Aron had been taken to the Yeshiva in Cleveland where the first Levaiya was held. Then, it was brought back to Boro Park where the second Levaiya was held at Congregation Anshei Sefard, “The Sefardishe Shul,” with speakers set up for the overflow crowds in adjacent buildings (I went to listen in the dinning room of the Beis Yaakov around the corner). After that, the Aron was taken to Eretz Yisroel.

When we witness and go through the Petira of Gedolei Torah, and then, several years later, witness and go through the Petira of “the next generation” of their sons and sons-in-law and their Talmidim, it is most certainly most extremely of extremely painful.
