This morning, the bris of a great-great-grandson of the posek hador, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and a great-grandson of Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman and Rav Chaim Kanievsky, took place. The baby is a grandson of Rav Shraga Shteinman, a son of Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman. Rav Shraga is a son-in-law of Rav Chaim Kanievsky. The baby’s father is Rav Gedalya Honigsberg, a R”M at Yeshiva Shaarei Torah of Bnei Brak.
A few years ago, when Rav Honigsberg’s oldest son was born, Rav Elyashiv remarked that he would be able to be an eid, a witness, at his wedding, because, as a sixth generation descendant, he is not a halachic karov, a relative who is disqualified from eidus.
In other news, two weeks ago, a milestone was reached when Rav Yonason Honigsberg, a great-great-grandson of Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, embarked on his career in harbotzas haTorah as a maggid shiur of Daf Yomi in the famous Itzkowitz Bais Medrash in Bnei Brak. Rav Honigsberg is a great-grandson of Rav Elyashiv’s son-in-law, Rav Chaim Kanievsky.

He should be Zoche to do it with Gezunt!!!!!
May he be zocheh to attend the chasuna (though I doubt they’ll ask him to be an eid) and may we all be zocheh to see it with Moshiach being mesader kiddushin.
Fascinating halacha! Never thought about that
I having trouble with the math here.
“Rav Honigsberg is a great-grandson of Rav Elyashivs son-in-law, Rav Chaim Kanievsky.”
This means that the newborn is the great-great grandson of Rav Chaim Kanievsky.
This means that the newborn is the great-great-great grandson of Rav ELyashiv.
Yet, the article opening is
“This morning, the bris of a great-great-grandson of the posek hador, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv.”
So, which one is it?
Great-Great-Great or Great-Great?
Correct me if I’m wrong. Although technically correct on the relationship issue, there is a problem with being an eid after a certain age. See Sanhedrin 18a.
Tony the tiger says They’re GRRRRREAT!
see the Gemara in Sanhedrin 27b.
Actually it’s a machlokes Rishonim.
The Rif Rambam and Rosh agree.
However the RashbaM disqualifies any male grandchild forever.
