rav-mendel-gettingerIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Emanuel (Mendel) Gettinger zt”l.

Rav Gettinger served as the rov of Young Israel of the West Side in New York City. He also served with great devotion as the president of Ezras Torah and led the Derech Chochma Yeshiva Education Network.

Rav Gettinger was the first rov of the Young Israel of the West Side and served the kehillah for almost 60 years.

In his youth, he learned at Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn, NY, and was a talmid of the rosh yeshiva, Rav Yitzchok Hutner zt”l.

Rav Gettinger was married to Rebbetzin Rochel Gettinger, a daughter of the famed Rav Naftali Zvi Yehuda Riff zt”l and a great-granddaughter of the Netziv, Rav Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin of Volozhin.

Rav Gettinger, a brilliant talmid chochom, authored his magnum opus, Menach Yoma, which has groundbreaking insights into the shitah of Rabbeinu Tam regarding bein hashemashos.

Rav Gettinger spread Torah for many decades and impacted the lives of numerous people who were influenced by his wide-ranging Torah knowledge and depth of his caring heart.

Rav Gettinger passed away today, Shushan Purim, in Chicago, where he had been residing at his daughter’s home.

The levaya will take place this Sunday, March 8th, at 2 p.m., at the Young Israel of the West Side, located at 210 West 91st Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam, in Manhattan.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. A tremendous loss for Klal Yisrael. Rav Gettinger was an “old school” rav who taught, paskened, and led the people in his ambit. He was a Talmid Chacham of unparalleled stature and scholarship. Yehi zichro baruch.

  2. It is with great sadness that I and my wife learned of this great loss. Rabbi Gettinger was a giant of Torah and a giant of a man. He will be sorely missed by everyone who had the fortune to have known him.

  3. Rabbi Gettinger held an advance degree in mathematics from Columbia University and also did graduate work in engineering. Brilliant man.

He handed the day to day operations of the YI of WS shul over to Rabbi Dovid Cohen in 2006 or so

  4. I always think of Rabbi Gettinger as my rebbe. At Columbia University in the ’60s (we were once in the same math class there!) he gave a gemara shiur in which he taught us his methodology in learning which propelled me (and my friend Mel Barenholtz) into the highest shiur in Kerem B’Yavneh with no other preparation when we learned there in 1963-4. Before marriage he sat with me in a personal havruta on the relevant halakhot (it is unheard of that a hatan learns the halakhot of taharat hameshpacha from his rebbe). Though we have been living in Israel since 1977, we continued to consult him on every critical issue. His answers to my questions were not meant for the internet, but were tailored to our situation, which is the classical way to pasken. There is lots more to say, but I will just mention his outstanding children who are carrying on his legacy.

  5. He was also the Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva of New Haven Connecticut

HE CAME From a family of Boyaner chasidim who came here from Galitzia around WW1, he learned at yeshiva Chaim 0Berlin where he was one of the most esteemed talmidim of Harav Hutner, he married into an illustrious rabbonishe mishpacha–his father-in-law was Rabbi Rif, president of Ezras Torah and Volozhiner descendant.

Rabbi Gettinger had a wide-ranging knowledge and was also a mathematician. He had a chabura of college students whom he encouraged to become real benei Torah and many of his talmidim looked at him as their rebbe and mentor for the rest of their lives. One of his talmidim founded a yeshiva in New Haven and Rav Gettinger served as rosh yeshiva there will coming home to Manhattan and his rabbonus for Shabbos. There were many people who benefited greatly from his Torah wisdom and encouragement

  9. I heard the Kevurah is in Har Menuchos at 18:30
    Monday

Deep loss for Klal Yisrael and each member of our family personally

  10. Who even remembers all the accomplishments….. he was a person who learned with hasmodo all the years, not like the typical synagogue rabbi. He founded a kolel in the West Side in the 60s, called Bait Ulpana, when community kolelim were unheard of. He had a unique perspective on many halacha questions. Wow, what a person and could be sweet as sugar and entertain little children one moment, and exchange brilliant Torah thoughts in the next. SHarp, outspoken, and gave up much of his own life for the heritage of his father-in-law

  11. He was a great Talmid Chacham. I will truly miss his Shabbat drashot which displayed his incredible erudition and his boundless love of Clal Yisrael. His Shabbat Teshuva drashot were unsurpassed masterpieces.

  12. I was in his shiur at Touro. Very unique and stimulating. I remember it well to this day. His sefer Mnach Yoma is incredible. Yihu Zichro Baruch!

  13. Rav Ahron Soloveichik heard I was moving to South Bend, Indiana and asked who the Rav was. I answered Rabbi Yisroel Gettinger. The Roshe Yeshiva responded that HIS FATHER was a Talmud Chachum, then paused for 2-3 moments and corrected himself, saying “A Great Talmud Chachum”.

If you understood whom Rav Ahron was, you knew he was not casual with words, and some serious reflection HAD lead to his recalling particulars of Rabbi Emanuel Gettinger before adusting his evaluation and adding “GREAT”. I personally never heard him refer to any other Talmud Chachum as Great, although he also had great praise for his son Yisroel.

For those who don’t know, Rav Hutner was a student of Rav Ahron’s father, Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik.
Rav Ahron personally told me Rav Hutner would come by the home of the Soloveichiks at least 4-5 times a week.
Rav Moshe Soloveichik appointed Rav Hutner to teach his son Rav Ahron starting when he was 11 years old. Rav Ahron was Rav Hutner’s first student.
