Following the passing of gedolei hador in recent years and the addition of new members of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah, there’s a new development in the titles used for the gedolim.

This morning, the Israeli Yated, for the first time, used the title “Rabbon Shel Kol Bnei Hagolah,” or “Rashkebehag,” for the Ponovezh rosh yeshiva, Rav Gershon Edelstein, nosi of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah.

The title Rabbon Shel Kol Bnei Hagolah had previously been used for Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach and the Steipler Gain. Rav Shach had instructed that “Maran” be used for Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, and Rav Dovid Povarsky.

Later, Rav Elyashiv was also referred to as Rashkebahag.

Until now, Rav Gershon Edelstein was referred to as “Rabbeinu Maran Rosh HaYeshiva,” and the other members of the council Moetzes as “Hagaon Hagadol.”

Now the ziknei hador, Rav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi (94), Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman (92), Rav Dov Landau (92), and Rav Berel Povarsky (91) will be referred to as “Maran.” The other Moetzes members of Degel HaTorah remain under the title of “Hagaon Hagadol.”

  1. Mazel Tov on the promotion.
This is like when Chabad calls the Lubavitcher Rebbe Zatza”l Nasi Hador, when in fact he was definitely one of the leaders but was not the Nasi Hador, many other communities had their leaders.

    • Because the rich guys are making extravagant weddings and Shabbos Sheva brachos’s. Because rich guys still have to spend a Pesach vacation in Dubai, Croatia, Morocco, Cozumel, Arizona, Orlando, etc… Moshiach can wait. No rush.

    • This article is discussing the Ashkenazi Degel Hatorah leadership. The Sephardim have their own Moetzes Chachmei Hashas and can decide how to honor their Chachamim.

    • The Sefardisheh Community has their own Moetzes. By the same token, you could say there are no Dati Le’Umi Rabbonim listed. But they, too, have their own board. No Chssidishe were mentioned either. You guessed it, they too have their own Moetzes. What’s the problem? Are you aware that SHaS Party started upon the advice of Rav Shach?

The Beis Yosef did not reckon with Ashkenazi poskim, with the exception of the Rosh (see his introduction to the Beis Yosef). And the Darkei Moshe paskens in accordance with the Ashkenazishe poskim. Are yo suggesting Moshiach didn’t come in their times for that reason?

  2. I see you don’t allow comments, that don’t push your agenda. I guess this is a Yated website. I’m not surprised.

  3. The Yated is under the Moetzes in Eretz Yisroel, so it is very likely that there was a discussion among the gedolim on the names and the Yated is doing their job as a voice for the Yidden to publicize it.

  4. גדול מרב – רבי. גדול מרבי – רבן.
    גדול מרבן – שמו”.

  5. I don’t know why some people are getting all worked up about this. A newspaper is free to use honorific titles as they see fit. Their decisions are not binding on anyone.

A bigger issue is how only Roshei Yeshivos are considered the leaders of Klal Yisroel as opposed to the Gedolei HaRabonim as well.
