rav-menashe-klein[Video and photos below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Menashe Klein zt”l, Ungvarer Rov and author of Mishneh Halachos.

Last Sunday, Rav Klein underwent a heart catheterization that proved unsuccessful as doctors battled to save his life. He was niftar today.

Rav Klein was born in 1924 to his parents, Rav Eliezer Zev and Rebbetzin Klein,  in a suburb near the town of Ungvar, Hungary, where his father served as rov. He studied in his younger years at the yeshiva of the Ungvarer Rov, Rav Yosef Elimelech Kahane.

When the Nazis swept across Europe, Rav Klein was taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp and later the Buchenwald concentration camp, and he survived until the liberation at the end of World War II.

Rav Klein subsequently traveled to the United States and assisted the Sanz-Klausenberger Rebbe, Rav Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam, the Shefa Chaim, in establishing Mosdos Sanz on American shores. He later opened the Ungvarer Bais Medrash and Yeshiva Bais Shearim in Boro Park.

Rav Klein became renowned as a preeminent posek and authored 17 volumes of his magnum opus, Mishneh Halachos, containing shailos uteshuvos on all areas of halacha.

Rav Klein also wrote Mitzvos Hamelech; Maggid Mishnah al Hatorah; Oim Ani Chomah on Eiruvin; Kehillos Yisroel, containing his correspondences with the Steipler Gaon; Pnei Moshe, containing his correspondences with his mechutan, the Pnei Menachem of Ger; Bais Rochel; Yemei Shemonah on Chanukah; Haggadah Maggid Mishnah; Hakinyanim; Pirsumei Nisah; and some other seforim, about 25 in all.

Rav Klein was renowned as a boki in all areas of Shas and poskim. For years, he spent his days and nights immersed in Torah, sleeping minimally while continually learning.

Twenty years ago, Rav Klein founded Kiryas Ungvar in Ramot, Yerushalayim, and two years ago he fulfilled a lifelong dream by finally settling in Yerushalayim.

Rav Klein was predeceased by his son-in-law, Rav Aryeh Leib Alter, son of the Gerer Rebbe, the Pnei Menachem.

He is survived by a large family of talmidei chachomim and marbitzei Torah. His sons are Rav Dovid Shlomo Klein, rosh yeshiva of Ungvar and son-in-law of the Nachlas Don of Modzitz; Rav Amram Klein, rov of the Ungvarer kehillah of Boro Park and son-in-law of the Alexander Rebbe; and Rav Moshe Klein. His daughters include Rebbetzin Biderman, wife of Rav Yaakov Yitzchok Biderman, Lelover Rebbe of Boro Park; Rebbetzin Hager, the wife of Rav Tzvi Hager, rov of Mukatch-London; and Rebbetzin Weinberg, wife of Rav Yehoshua Weinberg, mashgiach in Yeshivas Slonim.

The levaya will be held tomorrow, at 9:30 a.m., at the Ungvarer Bais Medrash in Ramot, Yerushalayim. Kevurah will take place on Har Hamenuchos.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. What a unbelievable talmid chacham

I once called him with a shaylah about very complicated case.
he was so so clear in every facet of toirah

  2. he was one of our great poskim, bar none. Baruch Dayan HaEmes. He will be sorely missed, a gadol batorah, who left us his Mishneh Halachos.

  3. To commenter #6 – I believe that Rav Klein z”l, Elie Wiesel, and Professor Dovid Weiss Halivni (famous for his theories about the “Stammaim”) grew up together and were childhood friends

  4. To Commentor #13.

The Rav was born in Ungvarer. And Elie Wiesel was born in Sighet.

They met at Buchenwald. They have remained friends ever since.

Matter of fact, Wiesel has been a financial supporter to Kiriat Ungvar.

Dovid Weiss Halivni also grew up in Sighet. I know of no connection to the Rav.

  5. The Rov and Elie Wiesel were daily chavrusos since the War years. If they were not in the same city, they learned by phone. They were together in Theresienstadt.

At the conclusion of the Levaya, the Beis Din of Ungvar announced that the three sons would all be Rebbes.
