rav-mordechai-eliyahuOver the last 24 hours, Rav Mordechai Eliyahu, former Sefardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, has regained consciousness and is showing improvement in his condition. Rav Eliyahu’s condition had deteriorated on Sunday and he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim where doctors worked to stabilize him. In fact, the situation was so dire that doctors had called Rav Eliyahu’s chance of improvement “nonexistent.”

Boruch Hashem, the tefillos helped,” said Rav Elyahu’s son, Rav Shmuel Eliyahu, rov in Tzefas.

The situation is still critical, but the fact that Rav Eliyahu is conscious is a miracle, his son said.

Ten months ago, the 81-year-old former Rishon Letzion suffered a heart attack and underwent bypass surgery. A few days later he suffered a stroke. Then, in August, he collapsed at his Kiryat Moshe home. He eventually underwent emergency surgery at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center. His condition first improved, but had worsened in recent months.

Rav Eliyahu served as Chief Rabbi of Israel from 1983 to 1993.

All are asked to continue davening for Rav Mordechai Tzemach ben Mazal l’refuah sheleimah.
