candle-small3It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yerachmiel Cofnas zt”l, longtime rov in England and one of the last remaining talmidim of the Chofetz Chaim and the Radin Yeshiva. Rav Cofnas was niftar on the first day of Shavuos at the age of 98.

Rav Cofnas served as a rov in Birmingham for over 50 years and later as rov in Liverpool. During the last period following his retirement, he resided in Gateshead.

During his years in the rabbinate, Rav Cofnas devoted himself to his mispallelim as well as to communal needs, raising the level of Yiddishkeit around him, including adherence to kashrus and shmiras hamitzvos.

Rav Cofnas was an old-time rov whose hashkafos reflected the weltanschauung of the pre-war Torah world in Europe in which he was raised. A man of impeccable integrity and unwavering emunah, Rav Cofnas carried the image of the Chofetz Chaim with him throughout his life, though he was just in his high teens when the Chofetz Chaim was niftar.

His passing severs another link to the bygone world so distant from ours in a literal and figurative sense

May Rav Cofnzas serve as a meilitz yosher for his family, his communities in Great Britain, and the global Jewish community.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Rav Cofnas never lived in gateshead, he lived in manchester. We have lost a huge tzaddik who used to relate so many stories about the chofetz chaim. Towards the end of the chofetz chaims life he had a private minyan of only his ten closest talmidim one of them being rav Cofnas. May he be a meilitz yosher for all of us.

  2. there is a yid in westgate, lakewood – R Solomon who was also a talmid chofetz chaim, and there is a Yid in Boston – who is actually the little boy in the famous picture of the Chofetz chaim who is also still alive
