On Sunday morning, Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, rosh yeshiva of Slabodka, traveled to Military Prison 10 to visit yeshiva bochurim who had been taken into custody over the weekend for refusing to comply with their army draft summons.
Joining Rav Hirsch for the prison visit were Rav Avraham Salim and Rav Moshe Maya, both members of Shas’s Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah.
The IDF, which normally enforces an eight-day waiting period before permitting outside visits to new detainees, granted a special exception for this meeting. Military officials said the visit was arranged to help confirm that the young men’s religious needs were being respected, including access to kosher meals and proper time for davening.
Prior to heading to the prison, Rav Hirsch conferred with Rav Dov Landau, where they reviewed ideas for further protest activities in the continuing fight against mandatory chareidi conscription. Those proposals have since been passed along to relevant professionals for consideration.
The three bochurim were detained after they received official call-up notices and declined to appear at the Draft Office as instructed.
