Rav David Yosef, a son of Chacham Ovadia Yosef, was attacked by a group of anti-Semites in Mexico City. Rav David Yosef arrived in Mexico to assist the local Jewish community in the aftermath of the passing of Jewish billionaire Moshe Saba in a helicopter crash. “Rav Yosef spent Shabbat in Mexico City to offer the local Jewish community spiritual support and encouragement in light of Moshe Saba’s death. The attack occurred Motzoei Shabbat. He left the Sha’arei Shalom shul and was making his way to the house he was staying in when a group of thugs carrying eggs shoved him and shouted anti-Semitic epithets,” one of the rabbi’s associates said.
It remains unclear whether Rav David was familiar to the thugs or if he was chosen randomly. “I assume they (thugs) were aware that an important rabbi was visiting,” said the associate.
“The rav’s entourage protected him. He was hit by a few eggs. The shul’s security guards chased after the perpetrators, apprehended them and turned them over to local police,” he said.
