Rav Povarsky: “One Who Does Not Get Vaccinated Should Not Be Teaching Children”

Last night, the menahel of a network of Talmudei Torah in eretz Yisroel visited the residence of Rav Berel Poversky, Rosh Yeshivas Ponovezh in Bnei Brak, for a lengthy consultation. During their discussion, the menahel brought up the matter of the Covid vaccine, asking whether he can obligate the mechanchim teaching in his mosdos to get vaccinated, and if they refuse to do so, what recourse he has.

Rav Povarsky was unequivocal. “Before you ask questions of Choshen Mishpat and whether an employer has the right to compel an employee for such things, ask yourself if such a person deserves to be teaching children – a person who has no sense of responsibility for the lives of his students and their families, to cause them to suffer because of him and possibly become ill. Is this person worthy of being an educator?”

Moreover, said Rav Povarsky, “the opinion of gedolei Yisroel is that the vaccine should be taken, and this melameid thinks he is wiser than the gedolei Yisroel? Is it proper for this man to be an example of chinuch for children of Klal Yisroel?”

  1. We don’t pasken based on maisos. Either, fast for three days, put out a thsuva detailing all sources and reasons, or whatever you say will not be considered a psak, but a maisa.

    • Where did you get this “da’as Torah” from?! Our entire halacha and mesora is based on our gedolim, and I would like to know if you only follow things that came from someone who fasted for three days or wrote a lengthy detailed teshuva. If the answer is yes, then you are practicing a different Yiddishkeit than the rest of us. I suspect that you only have such strange standards when the guidance contradicts your non-Jewish Gadol Hador, the wacko Dr. Wakefield.

      • Dear 6:28 Am Hooretz, our halacha and mesora are based on concrete shakla vetarya, not on some hearsay, and definitely not on some cult of personality. There is a reason why CHAZAL chose the endless arguments of Gemora to transmit our mesora. Rav Moshe Feinstein, for example, is a brilliant example of how a psak halacha should be made: he put out coherent arguments in his tshuvos, and I won’t even mention his anivus and non-politicking. A personal conversation is relevant only to the parties participating in a conversation; an attempt to affect the tzibur needs solid halachik arguments – screaming “gedolim” won’t take you far, my feeble-minded friend.

  2. If you’re vaccinated, you’re protected, no? Especially if you’re wearing a mask or double mask. So what’s anyone’s business if they’re vaccinated or not?

  3. ” the opinion of gedolei yisroel is that the vaccine should be taken “. While this is true , there are gedolei yisroel who are of the opinion that a healthy person who is not in risk , should not at this time take the vaccine until the results of taking the vaccine beome clearer .

    • Unless (a) you name those “gedolei yisroel” that you were referring to in your post and (b) describe the standards you use to designate them as gedolei yisroel, you ain’t no ish ne’eman.

  4. And what if the michanech already had Covid and now has natural antibodies? Is he still michuyav to take the unproven (the vaccines have STILL not been officially approved by the FDA or the CDC. They are all in the clinical trial) vaccines?

    • excuse me. if you dont trust vaccines to work or work safely . why do you trust the sciene when they say you get some immunity from catching covid? their is no guarantee how long a covid infected immunity lasts.
you sound really dumb picking and choosing so wantonly.

Where is the unedited video of this discussion?

Clearly, there’s a lot missing over here.
