In an interview with the ‘Bama‘ magazine this week, Rav Shalom Ber Sorotzkin, Rosh Yeshiva of Ateres Shlomo, emphasized the unprecedented challenges that Klal Yisroel are facing today.

“This is the first time in Israel that we are facing such trials and difficulties that have not been seen since the establishment of the state, and even before that. There is a need to prepare the youth for the period we are going through and will continue to face,” he said.

Rav Sorotzkin’s remarks come against the backdrop of the wedding of his son, where a controversial song was sung to the words “‘בשלטון הכופרים, ובלשכותיהם אין אנו מתייצבים – In the rule of the heretics, and in their offices, we do not stand,” a video of which garnered millions of views.

The Rosh Yeshiva further expressed his concern, stating, “All of this—’עוצו עצה ותופר’—is that people must repeatedly instill in their hearts the greatness of our position, that no one can change us. If, God forbid, there is no sufficient preparation for this period, woe to us and woe to our neshamos.”

When asked about a change in attitude toward the authorities, and whether the community has become “kannaim,” Rav Sorotzkin clarified: “The outlook has not changed and will not change. We have never been in the streets [for protests], we have never engaged in anything in this matter. The only way is ‘בוא בחדריך’—to escape into the study halls of Torah.”

  1. What he did at his son’s chasunah, turning it into a protest against the government, using the language used, was shameful !
Can only imagine the pain it caused families who lost husbands / fathers in the war!
    As well as the hatred
    against Torah!
Let alone the horrific example set for the newlywed couple !

    • This is a debate that has been going for many years and it sounds like you don’t fully understand.
In a nutshell-the israeli government is trying to force chareidim who are learning Torah to draft into the army, thereby cutting away the yoke of Torah. Of course there is hishtadlus and we need people to fight in the army, nobody argues on that. To make a mandatory draft, however is lessening the Torah that will be learned. As a result, it would create a negative effect on the Torah in the future generation. This is the statement that Rav Sorotzkin was trying to make. Nothing to do with the actual Gaza war.

    • MK, always a step ahead in the thought process of talmidei chachomim.
I hope you second-guess your GP as much as you do the leaders of klal Yisroel.
Good luck to you, and your fortunate offspring.

  2. Why is that a controversial song

that they are kofrim is news?
That the Gedolim said not to go to the draft office we know
That they sung about it is to strengthen oneself to be firm in your position.
