It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Shlomo Pappenheim zt”l, one of the most prominent Chassidim of Toldos Aharon, the deputy chairman of the Eida Hachareidis of Yerushalayim, and the founder of the Bais Hachalmah convalescent home, Kiryat Banos girls school and Bayis Lepleitos. He was 91.

Rav Shlomo was born in Munich, Germany, on the 14th of Iyar, 5626, to his father, Rav Gavriel Pappenheim, and his mother, Chana.

From his youth, he was a great activist and was close to the rabbonim of the Eidah Hacharedis. He was a disciple of the Rav Y. Z. Dusinsky, author of Shomer Emunim and Divrei Emunah of Toldos Aharon, and the current Toldos Aharon Rebbe. He was also very close to Rav Berel Soloveitchik, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivas Brisk, with whom he consulted often.

He founded the aforementioned maternity convalescent home in Telz-Stone, Kiryat Banos girls’ school, and the Bayit Lepleitot orphanage, as well as educational institutions for members of the Old Yishuv in Yerushalayim, where thousands of children were educated.

As part of his activities, he established thousands of Torah homes from those from broken families, all of whom he viewed as his own sons and daughters.

A special part of his accomplishments came in the framework of the Eidah Hachareidis, of which Rav Shlomo was the deputy chairman. Rav Shlomo was often a mediator in matters of controversy. He was one of the founders of the Eidah’s kashrus division.

During Teves 5774, his wife, Mrs. Bluma Pappenheim passed away.

Rav Shlomo leaves behind a family of hundreds of descendants. His sons are Rav Yaakov Eliezer, Rosh Kollel of Kollel Shomrei HaChomos; Rav Gavriel, Director of the kashrus division of the Eidah; and Rav Avrohom; and his sons-in-law, Rav Yaakov Mendel Yurowitz, member fo the Badatz of the Eidah; Rav Yosef Shisha, rosh yeshiva at Yeshivas Rama; and Rav Eliyahu Weiss of the Toldos Aharon kehillah.

The levaya was held at the Toldos Aharon Bais Medrash in the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Yerushalayim, followed by kevurah on Har Hamenuchos.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Rabbi Pappenheim was director of Bayit Leplaitot/Kiryat Banot along with Rabbi Naftuli Rosenfeld, the founder, and Rabbi Shmuel Yitzchok Stern, all of blessed memory. This fact doesn’t detract from his (their) worthy deeds, it’s just a matter of historical accuracy.

    • He was the founder. The other names mentioned are men much younger than him who were given the great responsibility of helping him build it. Facts are indeed facts.
