Rav Shlomo Zalman Rechtscheffer z”l

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Shlomo Zalman Rechtscheffer z”l. He was 83.

Reb Shlomo Zalman was born on 3 Adar in Yerushalayim to his father, Reb Yitzchok.

As a child, he studied at Talmud Torah Meah Shearim during the years of the establishment of the state of Israel. He then learned at Talmud Torah Etz Chaim in Yerushalayim and at Yeshivas Itur Chachomim.

He was a talmid of the gaon Rav Nota Freund, who nurtured him and recognized his talents and kishron. Already at the age of 16, he was farhered with his class by Rav Aharon Kotler, during which Rav Aharon asked a question that no one knew the answer it – no one except Reb Shlomo Zalman, who was the youngest of the students and answered the question quietly.

He married his wife, the daughter of the late Rav Fishel Henig, one of the noted Chassidim of Karlin, and thus all his life Reb Shlomo Zalman was attached to the rabbonim of Karlin.

He toiled in Torah all his days and was known for his prodigious memory, remembering everything he learned from his childhood with a grasp of Shas by heart.

A central chapter in his life was his involvement in the revelation of kevorim of tzaddikim in Eretz Yisroel. One of the noted kevorim that he helped identify is the kever of the Tanna Yonasan Ben Uziel in Amuka.

All his life, he carried himself modestly, performing chesed quietly and without fanfare.

He leaves behind an outstanding family. One of his sons is Reb Avraham, editor of the HaMevasser newspaper.

The levayah was held at the Shamgar Funeral Home in Yerushalayim and kevurah took place on Har Hazeisim.

The family is sitting shivah at his home in Kiryat Shomrei Emunim in Yerushalayim.
