rabbi-shmuel-eliyahuRav Shmuel Eliyahu, chief rabbi of Tzefas and a son of former Chief Rabbi Rav Mordechai Eliyahu, issued a p’sak last year that all men are forbidden to dress as women even on Purim, since the issur of “Lo yiulbash gever simlas isha – Neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment” (Ki Seitzei 22:5) spplies regardless.

In response to a question sent as a text message, Rav Eliyahu noted that some authorities exclude children under the age of 13 from this issur or permit the wearing of one women’s garment, but said that those who follow the ruling strictly will be blessed.

The question and answer was published in the Olam Katan bulletin distributed in Eretz Yisroel.

  1. 2) Although it is customary to dress up in costumes on Purim, care must be taken that men do not don women’s clothing, and women do not wear men’s clothing as doing so is a biblical transgression of “Lo Tilbash” as well as being a problem of Pritzus.

This applies to children as well, and G-d fearing people should not treat this lightly. (See Mishna Berura Siman 696:30 and Be’er Heitev Os 13. See also Aruch HaShulchan and Siddur Ya’avetz who are very stringent with this.)

  2. The M”B does NOT say anywhere that it is assur, he says that some people say we should be mevatel this minhag and if only one garment is of the opposite gender than perhaps we don’t need to protest. But the Rema paskens it is fine and the M”B DOES NOT say it’s Assur, it is important to quote accurately.
