rav-shmuel-kamenetsky-3Newsweek & The Daily Beast have once against released their list of “50 Most Influential Rabbis of the Year.”

After five years of this round-up, it is clear that the list is largely meaningless, and its compilers revel in the fact that it arouses harsh criticism, even contempt.

The compilers of the list dismiss criticism by stating that “The list is subjective. Its creators never expected it to be taken as seriously as it is.”

Most of those on the list are Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist rabbis.

Rabbi Yehudah Krinsky of Chabad, who was number 1 the last two years, is at number 2.

Maran Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Philadelphia, is at number 21.

Rav Hershel Schachter, rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon, is at number 12.

Lehavdil:

The infamous Sara Hurwitz – who, we should note, is self-admittedly actually a “Rabbah” (sic), not a rabbi – is at number 32. Her mentor, Avi Weiss, is at 11. And their partner, Dov Linzer, “rosh yeshiva” of the Open Orthodox Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, is at 42.

May Hashem cause those who are far from the path of Torah to recognize true Torah observance.

  1. May Hashem help those who constantly involve themselves in useless and foolish banter and chit-chat to find some amount of common sense and maybe even a little yiras shomayim. Lmaan loi niga lorik …

  2. It is always hard to recognize that a person that is keept at a high esteem in ones own group is not så upheld outside this group.

  3. It’s articles like these that are stopping Moshiach from coming!

actually, nothing is stopping Moshiach from coming.

  4. #2 – Both

If you want to do a real “lehavdil” you can list some of those Reform and Conservative type.

Don’t use those who keep Shabbos as your example of a “lehavdil”

  5. to #2: newsweek’s coverage was based on their assesment of impact on the entire jewish community and even more broadly. their use of rabbi covers both men and women. i was suprised that no chassidic rabbi beyond lubavitch was listed and i think the number of modern and orthodox was overstated.

  6. I think for the Reform and Conservative. Instead of ‘Rabbi’ it should read ‘Raah Beh’ and for Sara ‘Raah Bah’.

  7. The list is a joke. A conservative rabbit is number one on the list. Individuals who are heretics calling themselves rabbis. Imagine making a list of the top doctors anmd listing elementaery school dropouts.

  8. Lehavdil? Hashem doesn’t need you to separate. You clearly don’t agree with Sara Hurwitz, and neither do I for that matter, but that term is denegrating

  9. Yidden all over the world are asked to continue reciting Tehillim and learn Torah as a Zechus for the famous Magid of the generation Harav Shlomo Brevda Shlita, who is in need of a Refuah Sheleimah. He has been hospitalized at a medical center in Manhattan his condition is critical.

The name for Tehillim is: “Shlomo Leib ben Miriam”

  10. Although Orthodox do not agree with what Conservative and Reform are doing, still they are not abandoning their faith and turning to another. I don;t think we have a right to show disdain for any Jew who declares himself Jewish and affiliates himself with Judaism, as that is not the best attitude tro have. No one has all the answers.

  11. What number will Moshiach Tzidkaynu obtain in

    their rating???

    May we find out

    Bimhayraw Bimhayraw

    Byawmaynu B’Kawrov

  12. Sadly, Reform and Conservative are not halakhic movements. However, I feel we can learn from them. The Reform are very makpid on chesed to both Jews and Non-Jews, and stress making the world a better place through acts of service and striving for a more just society. They embody emunat hanevi’im in this sense. JTS, which was once led by personally Orthodox teachers, such as the Grush Lieberman, R’ Levi Ginzberg, R Boaz Cohen, R’ Chaim Dimitrovsky R’ Israel Francus, Hakham Jose Faur, and Rav David Weiss haLivni, stands for mechkar and historical and contextual methodologies in limmud hatorah. We can and should learn from that, as well, and when these two elements are combined with traditional halakhic observance, we are doing the will of HKBH.

  13. I heard from a family member that a Conservative Rabbi recently gave a class inwhich he stated that driving on Shabbos to their Congregation for services is allowed since they are driving to pray ! Nu! Nu! What interesting traditional halachic observances they have.
