Rav Shmuel Mendlowitz zt”l

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports on the passing this evening of Rav Shmuel Mendlowitz zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Mesifta Bais Shraga of Monsey and a son of Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz zt”l, the legendary Torah pioneer and menahel of Yeshiva Torah Vodaas.

From the time the Mendlowitzes moved to Monsey in 1950, Rav Mendlowitz served as a pioneering marbitz Torah and communal builder. While he guided Mesifta Bais Shraga as a leading mosad haTorah, his wife, the late Rebbetzin Shoshana Mendlowitz, was a popular teacher at Bais Yaakov of Monsey and served as an eizer kenegdo to her husband.

In 1956, Rav Mendlowitz established Mesivta Bais Shraga together with his brother-in-law, Rav Yehoshua Shiff zt”l.

The Mendlowitzes were among the first Torah families to settle in the area, which at the time had no yeshivos and one kollel. They were among the pillars of the Monsey community, helping nurture it into the Torah metropolis we know today.

Rav Mendlowitz is survived by his children: two sons, Rabbi Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz, R”M at Mesifta Bais Shraga, and Rabbi Menachem Mendlowitz of Eretz Yisroel, and daughters, Mrs. Berkowitz, wife of R’ Zelig Berkowitz of Monsey; Mrs. Lebovits, wife of R’ Yaakov Lebovits of Monsey; Mrs. Greenbaum, wife of R’ Binyomin Greenbaum of Toronto; and Mrs. Lichtenstein, wife of R’ Dovid Lichtenstein of Monsey/Lightstone Group.

The levaya will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Mesivta Beth Shraga on Saddle River Road in Monsey.
