rav-shteinman1Rabbeim from Yeshiva Imrei Mordechai in Elad recently paid a visit to Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman to receive his brachos for a shanah tovah ahead of Rosh Hashanah. The rabbeim also posed various shailos to the senior gadol about running a yeshiva and guiding yeshiva bochurim.

After greeting Rav Shteinman, the rabbeim asked the following questions:

“When should seder in yeshiva conclude on Fridays?” asked a rebbi, who went on to explain that some rabbeim do not live in the city of the yeshiva and have to return to their homes before Shabbos. Some yeshivos finish seder on Friday at 12 p.m. while others conclude at 11 p.m. How should a yeshiva be noheig?

Rav Shteinman responded that seder on Fridays should conclude at 11:30 a.m.

The rabbeim then asked if rabbeim should be switched in the middle of the year or if it is preferred that a rebbi remain with one class for the entire year.

Rav Shteinman replied that it is good to witch every 6 months.

One of the rabbeim didn’t understand this. “Is this a must,” he asked Rav Shteinman, “or is it merely preferred?”

Rav Shteinman responded that sometimes it is a must, such as if a bochur does not fit well with his rebbi. Switching rabbeim will give the bochur an opportunity to start anew with the new rebbi. And the time for such a change, added Rav Shteinman, is before Elul and at Tu B’Shevat.

The rosh yeshiva then related to Rav Shteinman that at their yeshiva, they also have a kollel learning in their bais medrash. The arrangement is only for this year, he said, and then the avreichim will find a different place to learn. Is this okay?

Rav Shteinman said that it is.

The rosh yeshiva then said that the kollel only learns there for an hour a day. Should that hour be at the beginning or end of the day?

Rav Shteinman said that it should not be early, as the kollel members do not arrive on time (for various reasons, including family responsibilities etc. – ed.) and boys may learn from them.

The rosh yeshiva then noted that he is careful about being makpid on shemiras hasedorim in the yeshiva, but one of the rabbeim added with a smile that is hard to enforce this with the avreichim.

A final question was posed by the rosh yeshiva: Some avreichim, he said, are learning dayanus and Choshen Mishpat, and many of them need a laptop computer for this purpose. The rosh yeshiva asked, is it a problem for them to bring the laptop into the bais medrash? Will it affect the tzuras habais medrash or negatively affect the bochurim?Rav Shteinman said that there is nothing to worry about it. If the avreichim are shteiging and learning seriously, the bochurim will learn that from them.
