Hundreds of thousands gathered in Yerushalayim on Wednesday for the levaya of Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l. But the Elyashiv family weren’t the only ones who tore kriah.
At the instruction of Maran Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman, yeshiva bochurim and yungeleit carried out the traditional kriah, or tearing of clothing, to indicate a sign of aveilus, a practice generally performed only by krovim of a niftar. With the petirah of the gadol hador, the senior gadol, Rav Shteinman said that Bnei Torah should reis kriah.
Rav Shteinman performed the kriah while seated in a car at the levaya next to a vehicle carrying Rav Elyashiv’s son-in-law, Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky.
