Maran Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman has publicly backed Rav David Lau to be the next Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Israel. Rav Shteinman has instructed Degel HaTorah MKs – Moshe Gafni, Uri Maklev and Yaakov Asher – to work toward the election of Rav Lau, the chief rabbi of Modi’in, in the electoral committee for the chief rabbis.
Earlier this week, potential candidate Rav Yitzchok Dovid Grossman, of Migdal Ha’emek, announced he would not be running, thus paving the way for Rav Lau’s endorsement.
Yesterday, Rav Yaakov Shapiro, the Merkaz Harav rosh yeshiva, also declared his candidacy for the position.

A three way race between Rabbis Stav, Rabbi Shapiro and Rabbi Lau. Sounds like a hearty race!
