simcha-schustal-5[Photos below.] [Levaya info below.] It is  with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Simcha Schustal zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Bais Binyomin of Stamford, Connecticut, who was niftar a short while ago at the age of 89.

As reported early this morning here at Matzav.com, Rav Schustal was hospitalized in serious condition at Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, NJ. The rosh yeshiva had been residing at the home of his daughter in Lakewood for the last while.

Rav Schustal, one of the ziknei roshei yeshivos of our generation, established one of the most prominent and illustrious Torah families in the yeshiva world. He was renowned for his phenomenal hasmadah and ahavas haTorah, and his sterling middos and character traits which were passed down to his children, who are all exemplary individuals. He and ybl”c his rebbetzin served as models of shalom bayis and the refined behavior with which a Yid should conduct himself. While being a giant in Torah and avodah, Rav Schustal possessed unparalleled humility and gentility. Never looking for recognition of any kind, he devoted his life to the learning and teaching of Torah and raising talmidim to live their lives based on the timeless ideals he espoused.

Rav Schustal’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the Torah world, which has been plunged into mourning, as yet another remarkable Torah giant has been taken from our midst. Mi yitein lonu temuraso.

In his younger years, Rav Schustal learned at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas under Rav Shlomo Heiman and later at Bais Medrash Elyon in Monsey. For many decades, Rav Schustal led the Stamford Yeshiva together with Rav Meir Hershkowitz, raising generations of talmidim who have gone on to become prominent disseminators of Torah.

The rosh yeshiva is survived by his rebbetzin, a daughter of the previous Mattesdorfer Rov, Rav Shmuel Ehrenfeld zt”l, as well as a large family of roshei yeshiva, marbitzei Torah and talmidei chachomim.

His sons are Rav Shlomo Feivel Schustal, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Gedolah Torah Temimah and rov of Bais Medrash Avreichim of Flatbush; Rav Dovid Schustal, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoha of Lakewood; and Rav Tovia Schustal, maggid shiur at Yeshivat Ateret Torah in Brooklyn. His daughters are Rebbetzin Miriam Ungarischer, wife of Rav Yerachmiel Ungarischer, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Nachlas Yisroel of Lakewood; Rebbetzin Reva Halpern, wife of  Rav Binyomin Zev Halpern, rov of Khal Bais Halevi of Lakewood; Rebbetzin Zeilberger, wife of  Rav Yeruchem Zeilberger, rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Bais Hatalmud; and Rebbetzin Bender, wife of Rav Michoel Bender, R”M at Yeshiva Bais Binyomin of Stamford.

Levaya details will be posted once they are finalized.

Update, 10:30 p.m.: At the present time, it appears that the levaya will begin at Bais Medrash Govoha, located at 617 Sixth Street in Lakewood, NJ, at approximately 9:15 a.m. The levaya will then continue at about 1 p.m. at Yeshiva Bais Binyomin of Stamford, located at 132 Prospect Street in Stamford, Connecticut. The aron will then be taken to John F. Kennedy Airport and flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah.

  1. Who is the true leader? The man who cares. The man who feels a responsibility for others. The one who sits huddled in a humble apartment in stamford away from the shackles of power, out of the spotlight. The person who is suffused with Torah. The person who has dedicated his life to being an eved Hashem and bows to no one but those who follow the true path.

A person like the 89-year-old RavSimcha Schustal who sits in a small home and learns.

Rav Simcha taught us about shalom bayis, and about caring for others. This is a true leader. He felt the pain of others and does everything he can to lessen it. A leader of this caliber labors far from the seat of power; he dwells instead amongst his brethren, caring for them as a shepherd tends to his flock.

  2. When he learnt torah the world around him literally did not exist. A true massmid. We lost a person who’s every thought was pure daas torah without any outside negios.

  3. #15- I think you mean “figuratively” and not “literally”, since none of us would be here to write these comments according to your choice of words.

  4. I remember the rosh yeshiva said that he really loved the words of the song “bitoich libi mishkan evneh”! that a yids goal must be to build a mishkan for hashem in his heart!
THis is how he lived! He loved Toirah! He loved Hashem! He loved to daven! He HATED KOVOD! HE HATED Machloikes! He hated the spotlight!
    I A selfless godol!
May all learn from him and zechisoi yogein oleinu!

  5. REB SIMCHAH ZATZAL LIVED A LIFE OF KEDUSHAH VTAHARA AT A LEVEL UNFATHOMABLE FOR AMERICA.HE WAS STANDING BEFORE THE SHECHINA AT ALL TIMES,EVEN WHEN LEARNING LONG SDORIM IN THE HOT STAMFORD HUMIDITY, HE DID NOT REMOVE HIS HAT OUT OF HIS CONSTANT YIROH.
HE WAS A GAON WHO GRASPED A SUGYAH IN ITS TOTALITY DOWN TO THE MOST MINUTE DETAILS, AND COULD BE MEFALPEL WITH DAZZLING CHESHBONOS AND LOMDUS. NEVERTHELESS ,BECAUSE OF HIS MIDDOH OF EMES ,WHICH HE LEARNT FROM REB SHLOMO HEIMAN ZATZAL,HE WOULD PUT ALL THAT ASIDE WHEN HE SAID HIS SHIUR,GIVING OVER ONLY WHAT HE FELT WAS AMITOH SHEL TORAH.
    MI YITEN TEMOROSO.

  6. Baruch Dayan HaEmes What a tragedy we caused cause we cant get our act together & do teshuva
WHAT ARE WE ALL WAITING FOR? has klal yisroel gotten the message from Hashem-waiting for us to start doing teshuva-have YOU done anything yet? how many more tragedies & Tzaddikim will it take C”V before we wake up & start doing teshuva? OVER 80 GEDOLEI HADOR have passed away within the past year R”L. HOW MANY MORE DO WE NEED TO LOSE C”V to let hashem know that we get the message for klal yisroel to start doing teshuva ASAP?

EVERYONE IS ASKING THE SAME QUESTION, WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR GEDOLEI HADOR WORLDWIDE?
it is supposed to be a wake-up call from Hashem for klal yisroel to start doing teshuva ASAP
i.e. when something happens to a person privately it is a message from Hashem to him alone BUT when something happens to a GADOL HADOR then it is a message to all of KLAL YISROEL

  7. To #17: yes, get off the internet & start learning. To#22: You are mamesh a Tzaddik! It’s a good thing you’re posting comments on websites! It takeh shows tremondous Tzidkus on your part! Keep up your great work on behalf of Kllal Yisroel!

  8. his singing of zeh hashem kivinu lo nagila (ay) vnismicha beyeshuoso on shavous is something that has always remained with me – more than twenty years later…

  9. Can someone post information regarding the yeshiva tape library? I would like to learn the torah of the rosh yeshiva zt’l and other maggidei shiurim from Stamford l’illui nishmat the Rosh Yeshiva, zt’l.

  10. let us do tehuva tifela and tzdaka mavren es
roea h gezara let us do this that is the only
way to bring mishich this year and it also
bring us back rov shstel and all the gadlem

  11. The levaye proved to us once again:
Kol haboireiach min hakovod hakovud roidef achrov!
Reb shloime feivel spolke about Reb simche not being a mesuder kidushin.
He lived in a hut in monsey and than in a tiny house in Stamford. He never wanted power or kovud. Just harbotzas hatoirah and mesiras mesoiras raboisav to future generations. Unbelievable how between the levayes he had about 15k people that came out likvoidoi.
    A lesson for todays….. … Kol ha…… Roidef…..

  12. No. 22. What is the average age of the gedolim who have passed away? Which 80 gedolim are you referring to? Do you have this information that klal Yisrael is to blame for their passing be-nevuah -or is this your own feeling? Do you also know which chataim klal Yisrael is guilty of that caused all of these petiros? Yes, it is terrible that they were niftar and a loss to Klal Yisrael but please don’t needlessly bad-mouth the Klal for the natural deaths of gedolim, especially those who were extremely old. Did you expect that Hashem would keep them alive forever? Has Mashiach come yet?
