rav-wosnerToday, in front of tens of thousands of people who gathered for the levaya of the eleven Sifrei Torah that got burned on the first night of Chol Hamoed in Eretz Yisroel (see levaya report here), Rav Shmuel Halevi Wosner, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin and author of Shu”t Shevet Halevi, highlighted the importance of kedushas bais haknesses, demonstrating the proper respect for the holiness of a place of prayer.

In his drasha, with great emotion, Rav Wosner remarked that during the Holocaust, the mainly affected communities were those of Ashkenazim, while Sefardim were largely spared from the atrocities of the Nazis. This, said Rav Wosner, was due to their fastidiousness in maintaining the sanctity of botei knesses.
“Therefore,” said Rav Wosner, “there is a great responsibility on everyone to preserve the sanctity of a bais haknesses, by not eating there, not talking on a cell phone in shul, and not speaking devorim beteilim there.

“There are botei knesses, “continued Rav Wosner, “that during simchos are converted partially into an ezras noshim and the like. This is something that is assur.”

“And there are other mitzvos of which the public has weakened their observance., These include Veahavta lereiacha kamocha (Love your neighbor as yourself), Kabeid es avicha ve’es imecha (Honor your father and your mother), and Lo seiliech rochil be’amecha, said Rav Wosner.

Approximately 30,000 attended today’s levaya.

  1. I’m glad that the Rov, Shlita, said something about having proper respect for the Kedusha of Shuls. This is unfortunately very neglected, these days.

  2. To mayin,

    And your point is….
We’re all impressed with your abilities and very sharp memory, however as the Lutzato said regarding the lack of chiddushim in his monumental work, the Mesilas Yeshorim…

  3. To all the Tzadikim asking why its not a chiddush, because ‘Kovod Bais Haknesess is an ongoing thing.
To you it might be a chiddush.
