yaakov-bistritz-5[Updated with shivah info below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yaakov Bistritz zt”lrosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Gedola Mercaz Hatorah Tiferes Mordechai of Montreal. He was 58.

Rav Bistritz had been very ill and talmidim of the rosh yeshiva in the United States and Canada had been storming the heavens with tefillos and Torah learning for a refuah shleimah.

Rav Bistritz learned during his younger years at Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland.  Rav Bistritz previously served as a R”M in the mesivta of the yeshiva. He became rosh yeshiva upon the departure of Rav Shlomo Avigdor Altusky, son-in-law of the previous rosh yeshiva, Rav Mottel Weinberg zt”l. At the yeshiva in Montreal, he imbued generations of talmidim with ahavas haTorah and the hashkafos of the derech haTorah, devoting himself to the welfare of his talmidim with great selflessness. His petirah has left his many talmidim and the greater Torah world in mourning.

Rav Bistritz is survived by his wife, Rebbetzin Yitty Bistritz; his children, R’ Yitzchok Bistritz, R’ Refoel Bistritz, R’ Eliezer Bistritz, R’ Dovid Bistritz, R’ Shmiel Bistritz, R’ Hillel Bistritz, R’ Baruch Bistritz, R’ Avrohom Bistritz, Mrs. Faigy Lipson, Mrs. Chantsie Heller and Mrs. Esty Lurie; and grandchildren.

Levaya details will be posted shortly.

Update: The levaya will take place tonight at 10:45 p.m. at Yeshiva Gedolah of Montreal, located at 6155 Chemin Deacon in Montreal, QC. The levaya will continue on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Khal Ahavas Torah, located at 2 Ribier Court, at Concorde Drive, in Monsey, NY.

  1. Baruch Dayan Haemes.
He was a tremendous tolmid chocham and a true mentch. A great loss for klal Yisroel.
Hashem should give his wife, children and grand children all the koach they need in these difficult times.
    Yehi Zichro baruch.

ONCE AGAIN TRAGEDY STRIKES AGAIN BY HASHEM

are we going to EVER get hashems wake-up call for teshuva? or will we just let it pass & think we can fool Hashem like we don’t know why such tragic events happen R”L?

TZAROS in klal yisroel is getting worse & worse by the day ALL due to one reason

HASHEM IS WAITING FOR US TO RETURN TO HIM & DO TESHUVA SO HE CAN BRING MASHIACH & RETURN TO US. Hashivenu Hashem….
HOW much more tzaros will need to happen C”V before we do teshuva? that is up to us. it can all end today.

MAY HIS NESHAMA HAVE AN ALIYA & may we all do teshuva so these tragedies never happen again C”V

  3. Rabbi Bistritz was a kind and wonderful person who was friends with my father and frequented our house very often. His loss has saddened the hearts of Am Yirael as a whole and we will pray for the day he will join us when Hashem sends His Annointed One. Ma his memory be as a blessing for all of Klal Yiroel.

  4. I met the Rosh Yeshiva zt’l many times. He was a very warm person who made everyone that met him feel important. Growing up, I was told many stories about his extraordinary Hasmada, he was Kol Kulo Torah!
Boruch Hashem we were Zocheh to have him in our Dor. Its a Chizuk to us all that, even in our day and age, a person can grow to be a true Adum Godol BaTorah.
May he be a Mailtz Yosher for his family, for his Talmidim and all those who’s life he influenced.
He loved and was therefore loved in return!

  5. to # 4

he was approximately 60 years old.

wish he made it longer, such a tzaddik

a tragedy & loss to klal yisroel to leave us so young a age.

    may he have an aliya

  6. An energetic man, who actually called me during his illness.

He devoted himself to ahavas torah, always learning until his last breath in this world.

He was someone who will remain in my heart forever.

A great leader, always smiling, even when he knew he was close to being nifter, he took it as a simin from hashem… yet he kept on learning.

    Baruch Dayan Haemes

  7. My son didn’t have an easy time in yeshiva until he entered Rav Bistritz’ shiur, when his attitude changed 180°. When he graduated, my son received a reward for perseverance, all because of the Rosh Yeshiva, zt”l. Yehi zichro baruch.

  8. Does anyone know where he is buried? A relative of mine as a close Talmud and would love to pray by his kever…

    • The Rosh haYeshiva zt’l was buried in Eretz Yisrael, in the bnei brak beis hakvaros, on the side where rav shach zt’l was buried.
From the main entrance, go straight, make a left where there’s a path, and make a right…the Rosh haYeshivas kever is close to a lamp post, and there aren’t so many burial plots taken around that area.
