rav-yechezkel-greenbergCongregation Bais Yisroel of Minneapolis celebrated the inauguration of its new rov on Sunday, August 22. Rav Yechezkel Tzvi Greenberg has assumed the position of full-time rov of the vibrant, growing kehillah. Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Philadelphia, honored the rov and the community by attending the event.

Congregation Bais Yisroel was founded 20 years ago by a young group of baalei batim wishing to daven and learn in an atmosphere similar to that which they had experienced in their yeshiva years. The shul hired Rav Moshe Tuviah Lieff, a talmid of Rav Shmuel Berenbaum zt”l and Rav Mordechai Gifter zt”l, to be its first rov. Rav Lieff’s dynamic personality galvanized the community and the shul grew rapidly.

Bais Yisroel was also the original host of the Minneapolis Community Kollel, which opened ten years ago this Elul. Rav Chaim Simcha Gibber, the rosh kollel, led a group of seven yungeleit who helped whet the Torah appetite of the kehillah.

One of those original seven yungeleit was Rav Yechezkel Tzvi Greenberg. For eight years, Rav Yechezkel learned in the kollel and with community members. Two years ago, Rav Greenberg was chosen to be assistant rov at Congregation Bais Yisroel. When Rav Lieff departed Minneapolis to assume rabbonus in Flatbush, Rav Greenberg became interim rov. Earlier this summer, Rav Greenberg was elected to serve as full-time rov and a hachtarah was planned.

Last Sunday morning, over 70 people, led by Rav Greenberg, went to the Minneapolis airport to greet Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky who flew to Minneapolis for the occasion.

Rav Kamenetsky praised the new rov as a talmid chochom and a baal achrayus. He told the kehillah that they can ask their rov any shailah and they can expect a proper, Torahdike answer.

Rav Chaim Simcha Gibber also addressed the crowd. A video of divrei bracha from Rav Shmuel Meir Katz, one of the senior poskim of Bais Medrash Govoah in Lakewood, was then shown to the audience. Rav Greenberg received shimush in p’sak from Rav Katz during his time as assistant and interim rov.

Dr. Nesanel Breningstall, neurosurgeon and a member of Bais Yisroel, delivered greetings on behalf of the community. He was followed by Rav Greenberg, who graciously accepted the mantle of leadership of the shul.
