rav-yisroel-chaim-freedman[Shivah info below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yisroel Chaim Freedman zt”l at the age of 85.

Rav Freedman served for more than four decades of the menahel of Yeshiva Ch’san Sofer in Boro Park, Brooklyn. He was a well-respected rebbi and mechanech, who imbued generations of talmidim with ahavas haTorah and yiras Shomayim while at the helm of a prominent mosad hachinuch. He is also remembered as a selfless baal chessed, who undertook to help and assist numerous people in myriad ways. He was a baal tzedakah who disregarded his own personal kavod to raise funds for the poor and needy. His humility and tzidkus were evident to one and all, and he was greatly respected by Yidden across the spectrum.

Rav Freedman leaves behind a family of bnei and bnos Torah, children and grandchildren who follow in his ways of Torah and chessed.

  1. He was also an incerdibly exceptional baal tefilla! My mother a”h used to daven by Rav Paler’s yeshiva (even though our family did not) on Rosh Hashona and Yom Kippur just to hear him. She said her teffilos were never the same when that ceased.
    Yehi Zichroi Baruch
P.S. Many likely remember him collecting tzedaka at chasunos. He even continued this practice when he was wheelchair-bound due primarily to the loss of his toes. He sat with bandages on his feet just to due for His kinderlech, His hayliger folk.

  2. A true Tzaddik. He collected charity for poor families in the neighborhood. Who will replace him? Who will fulfill his important work? Rav Friedman was a Tzaddik from generations ago. We have almost no one like him anymore. BDE with tears.

  3. Unbeknownst to many…a world class Talmid Chocham– chavrusa for many years with Rav Refael Green ZTL (who was one of highest Magidei shiur at Yeshiva of Staten Island)Torah,Anava,Chesed…Terrible, Terrible loss for Klal Yisrael..
