It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Yisroel Chaim Yehuda Grumer zt”l, who passed away on Shabbos afternoon.

Rav Grumer, a son of R’ and Mrs. Yitzchok Yaakov Grumer zt”l, was the rov of Congregation Shomrei Shabbos in Cleveland and rosh bais din in Cleveland.

An outstanding talmid chochom and posek, Rav Grumer was a senior member of the rabbinate in Cleveland. With tremendous Torah scholarship and a heart that had room for all the problems, questions and needs of anyone who could benefit from his knowledge, acumen or kindness, Rav Grumer was a selfless rov and leader who spent his life engaged in harbotzas haTorah and p’sak halacha.

In addition, many rabbonim were trained in rabbonus under the tutelage of Rav Grumer, whose impact has thus been felt by the next generation, as well.

Rav Grumer is survived by his devoted wife, Rebbetzin Rochel Grumer, and many grieving mispallelim, friends and admirers.

The levayah will be held today at 2:30 pm. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no one may attend the levayah or the kevurah.

Those wishing to be melaveh Rav Grumer may drive to the Berkowitz-Kumin chapel in Cleveland immediately after the last hesped and join the funeral procession. As the aron approaches the cemetery, do not enter the cemetery. There will be a turn off to head back home. Chaveirim will be there to remove the flags and direct drivers.

The cemetery has given a time frame for the kevurah, so the aron will be leaving very shortly after the hespeidim are over. The Zoom session will continue once the aron reaches the kever.

  1. What a Tzadik! He impacted so many in positive ways! he left behind no children, let’s all learn Mishnayos for his holy Neshama.

  2. I heard this from my friend Mike Kalman

I’m shaken by this news. I haven’t seen Rav Grumer in years but have such fond memories. He was Rafi’s sandek and I was in shul at mussaf when he had his heart attack. I visited him at his home during his recovery. I don’t remember what year that happened but I do remember the warm, easy, humorous conversation we shared during my visit. He was a brilliant posek with knowledge of col Torah, always at the forefront of his brain. When Hirsch Ribakow passed away, Rav Grumer came up to me unexpectedly and said, “I understand it’s been a tough year for you.” I didn’t know how he knew. It was common knowledge that Hirsch and I were close, and worked together. But I had never shared my internal pain with anyone.
Rav Grumer had a quiet greatness and humility. I am better for having known him, and I’ll miss him very much.
