Rav Zalman Leib Teitelbaum of Satmar arrived today in Eretz Yisroel to participate in the bris of his grandson. The baby is a son of his son, Rav Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum, who is the rov of Rav Zalman Leib’s kehillah in Yerushalayim.

Upon arriving this afternoon at Ben Gurion Airport, the Rebbe was detained for more than half an hour by airport personnel, who interrogated him about money he brought with him.

Customs officials conducted a comprehensive search of the Rebbe and his entourage.

Once the search was done, the Rebbe was allowed to proceed to Yerushalayim.

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said that the Rebbe went through customs smoothly and that the delay was not caused by the Interior Ministry.

Some expressed outrage that the Rebbe was delayed for a long time, noting that “it should have been clear that Rebbe is certainly not a smuggler smuggling in money.” Those who are upset claim that “someone must have informed the officials to search him in order to harm the rebbe.”

Others said that the delay was not very long and that such searches occur from time to time. The Skverer Rebbe, upon arriving in Israel last month, was detained for fifteen minutes.

Recent reports indicate that the rebbe is going to be distributed millions of dollars to institutions in Eretz Yisroel that do not receive money from the government, and it was apparently those reports that resulted in the detainment and search.

The Rebbe’s grandson’s bris will take place tomorrow morning  and he will then head off for a visit to London.
