English:

That which appears in parenthesis is added by Rav Mishkovsky.

• I ask that there are no hespedim, not before me or any atzeres or gathering of any kind.
• No major writeups in newspapers – not daily weekly or others. My photo is sufficient and not writing as is customary for others. Ten persons at the levaya is sufficient.
• Do not print pashkavilim, don’t make announcements via loudspeakers or radio.
• Make an effort to bury me quickly and prevent delay between my petira and kvura.
• Do not write any titles on the tombstone other than פה נקבר רב אהרון יהודא לייב בן רב נח צבי שטיינמן’
• My burial place should be the simplest, least expensive. Do not waste money on a burial site.
• As the minhag is to visit the kever at the end of shiva and shloshim, not to waste more than necessary for it is better giving money for limud and for certain, not on ‘devarim beteilim’.
• If seeking a place to daven before the amud results in too much time, it is preferred to engage in limud torah l’shem shomayim.
• Anyone seeking to assist me (it is for us in essence), lean a chapter of mishnayos daily until the end of the 12 months. Women can recite 10 chapters of Tehillim daily, including Shabbos and Yomtov.
• I request not to remember (Refer) to me as a tzaddik or a Yirei Shomayim so I am not insulted in the Olam HaEmmes.
• I ask mechila if I offended anyone and if there is anyone I owe money to, and in reality, he will not collect even though he has the right ‘al pi din’, please be moichel me.
• My children should not follow the aron for kvura as is minhag Yerushalayim.
• Do not name children after me but do not prevent it either
• If you wish, give money to tzedaka instead of a tombstone, to give but not to buy.
• (Last addition) Since many err, I am advising not to name children after me but I do not forbid it

  1. The English version is a little off. He didn’t say not to name after him as it states in the 3rd to last thing, it only mentioned his suggestion at the end.

  2. A more accurate translation posted by Israel Reader on this site.

    Some highlights from the tzava’a.:
    1. I request very much not to eulogize me. Not in my presence nor not in my presence.
    2. Do not to make any mourning rally or assembly of any sort, no matter by what name it is referred by.
    3. Not to write any article about me in the daily, weekly, monthly newspapers. It’s enough to print my picture, and not to write about me as is usual to write the history of the deceased.
    4. Do not print ads regarding the funeral. Do not announce it on loudspeakers or the radio. It’s enough that there will only be ten people at the funeral.
    5. I desire to be buried among simple people.
    6. Not to write on the tombstone any adjectives, only ‘here is buried Rabbi Aharon Yehudah Leib son of Rav Noah Zvi Steinman’
    7. Not to waste money for buying an expensive plot in the cemetery. If you want, then give charity, without buying an expensive plot.
    8. The monument should be the cheapest and simplest.
    9. I ask that I not be referred to as a righteous or God-fearing person, so that should not be embarrassed by this in the World of Truth.
    10. I advise not to call children by my name, but I do not forbid it.

  3. What I don’t understand is that many of the items in the Tzava’a were not adhered to.
    1. There were Hespeidim
    2. It was more than a mourning rally… it was huge
    3. Every paper and website has multiple articles
    4. Ads were all over EY about the Levaya. More than 10 people at the funeral.
    5. The Rov is buried in the Tzaddikim area
    6. We’ll see..
    7. Don’t know the cost
    8. Doubt it
    9. He was referred to as both
    10. I’m sure there are going to be many children named after him

So my question is why? Why was the Tzava’a not adhered to – at least 90% of it wasn’t adhered to?

    • Most of these items were before the tzavaa was opened. e.g. People left from all of Israel right after his petirah and the same goes for the articles and even at least 1 baby was named beforehand.

    • He didn’t say that he ONLY wanted ten people at the funeral. He merely expressed that it didn’t matter to him if there were no more than a minyan.
No need to go all out with a media blitz to pump up the “event”.

When a person is in the Olam Ha’Emes, the concept of having a BIGGER funeral than Ploni is totally foreign.

Rav Shteinman z”l internalized this in his daily life. He ran away from ga’ava and kavod (arrogance and honor) like a person runs away from a forest fire.

    • The version that I saw reads as follows:
ב. לא לכתוב שום מאמר עלי בעיתונים יומיים שבועיים חודשיים מספיק *תמונתי* ולא כמו שרגילים לכתוב תולדותם

Thus he did NOT request “to print my picture”, rather he said that it was SUFFICIENT to print his picture, in lieu of a writeup.
