It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rebbetzin Chana Tabak a”h.

Rebbetzin Tabak was the wife of Rav Eliyahu Tabak z”l, one of the early residents of Monsey and a member of a unique chaburah at Bais Medrash Elyon.

Chana Gertzulin came from a family that was both uncompromising in their observance of Yiddishkeit and simultaneously full of joy and laughter. Her parents, Rabbi and Mrs. Aaron Gertzulin, were so particular about having the entire family stay strong in their Yiddishkeit that they sent their children to public school rather than have them attend the Jewish schools that they felt were not up to standard.

Rebbetzin Tabak’s Jewish education was given in the home by her mother and grandmother. She was taught Chumash, dinim, parshas hashovua and Tze’ena Ure’enah in a group on Shabbos. The language of instruction was Yiddish. Amazingly, this all transpired in the Brooklyn of the 1940s and 1950s.

In 1959, Chana was introduced to her life’s partner, Rav Eliyahu Tabak, a budding talmid chochom with strong ideals. She brought the contagious simchas chaim that she saw in her own home to their marriage. Together, Rabbi and Mrs. Tabak melded into a formidable team that raised a unique, exemplary Torah family.

Rav Eliyahu passed away a little over two years ago.

The Tabaks had fifteen children, but throughout their lives, each one felt that they were the “only child” to their parents. Rabbi and Mrs. Tabak were always there for them.

Yehi zichrah boruch.

  2. The article says “they sent their children to public school rather than have them attend the Jewish schools that they felt were not up to standard.” I have a friend who took his children out of yeshiva and Beis Yaakov and put them in public school. I and other people tried to convince him to put them in a frum Jewish day school, admittedly not with the same standards. They refused to listen, and unfortunately, the result is that none of their children are frum today. Perhaps times were different then, but today, sending one’s children to public school is dangerous and irresponsible.

    • My Grandmother AH, Rav Olshin Mother, and just about all the prewar girls went to public schools, girl schools didn’t get established in the US until postwar

    • In some areas, in the public school in those years, many classes were composed of mostly Jewish students, and many teachers were religious Jews too. Many students also attended “Talmud Torah” after school.
No comparison to what’s going on in public schools today, and the dangers involved.
