faye-gittel-shisgalIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rebbetzin Faye Gittel Shisgal a”h, wife of Rav Eliyahu Moshe Shisgal zt”l, rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas in Brooklyn, NY. She was 92.

Rebbetzin Shisgal was the oldest daughter of the rabbon shel kol bnei hagolah, Maran Hagaon Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Tiferes Yerushalayim and the posek hador. Her grandfather was Rav Dovid Feinstein zt”l, rov of Uzdan.

Rav Moshe Feinstein was a talmid of his father and learned in the yeshivos of Slutsk, Shklov and Amstislav, before being appointed rov of Lubań, Russia, where he served for sixteen years. Rav Moshe married his wife, Rebbetzin Shima Kustanovich, in 1920. Their first three children, Fay Gittel, Shifra and Rav Dovid, were born in Lubań. Their youngest, Rav Reuven, was born in America.

Under increasing pressure from the Soviet regime, Rav Moshe moved with his family to New York City in 1936, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Rebbetzin Faye Gittel married Rav Eliyahu Moshe Shisgal, a son of Rav Avrohom Yitzchok Shisgal, rov of Congregation Anshei Vilna. Rav Eliyahu Moshe Shisgal was a highly-regarded talmid chochom and a tzaddik who eventually assumed a senior position at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas. Rav Shisgal passed away in the prime of his life, at a young age, in 1973. He predeceased his great-father-in-law, who passed away in 1986. Rav Moshe and Rav Shisgal are buried near each other on Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim.

Rebbetzin Faye Gittel was a tzadeikes who carried on the legacy of her illustrious parents. She stood at the side of her husband and supported him with great devotion and sacrifice. Her husband’s petirah 40 years ago was devastating, but the Rebbetzin carried on with great gevurah and bitachon, and served as an inspiring role model to her family and all who knew her.

The levaya is currently being held at Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim, located at 145 East Broadway in Manhattan, New York. The aron will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel, where the kevurah is expected to take place on Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim.

The Rebbetzin is survived by her children, Chana Sheindel Greher, Sarah Rifka Krainik, Bassie Shisgal and Pessy Shisgal, and their families, and her brothers, Rav Dovid Feinstein, rosh yeshiva of Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim, and Rav Reuven Feinstein, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Staten Island.

Yehi zichrah boruch.

  1. It was horrible to see todays posek hador Rav Dovid Feinstein Shlit”a and his younger brother the posek and tremendous tzaddik and gadol, Rav Reuvein Feinstein Shlit”a Rosh Yeshiva of Staten Island, in such raw pain over their beloved sister. It was inspiring to see such greatness and Kavod in one place. These two giants treat themselves like regular folk. Ashrei Ayin Ra’assah zos

  2. “Rebbetzin Shisgal was the oldest daughter of the rabbon shel kol bnei hagolah, Maran Hagaon Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Tiferes Yerushalayim”

Rebbetzin Shisgal was named for Rav Moshe’s mother evidently. I recall when Rav Moshe zt”l was ill, people were asked to be mispallel for Moshe ben Fayeh Gittel.

  3. I thought that at one point he was one of the key Maggidei Shiur at the Yeshiva of Staten Island? And, of course, his early Petira presented the yeshiva with severe difficulty.

[The Yeshiva of Staten Island was established as an “out of town” branch of the yeshiva Mesivta Tiferes Jerusalem – MTJ on the Lower East Side. Rav Moshe, ZT’L, was the Rosh Yeshiva of both yeshivos; while he spent the bulk of his time at MTJ, he would come to Staten Island one day a week and deliver two very advanced Gemora B’Iyun Shiurim. He would also spend Yom Kippur at Staten Island. The very famous incident with the flikering Beis Medrosh lights that was virtually a Siman Min HaShomaiyim that announced Rav Moshe’s Petira happened at Staten Island.]

At Rav Shisgal’s Levaiya, when Rav Moshe began his Hesped for the early Petira of the great Gadol B’Torah of his son-in-law, he empathetically exclaimed how we must absolutly realize that all the ways of Hashem are perfect and just.

(Much of the above I saw in the biography of Rav Moshe by ArtScroll.)

  4. for those who are asking… the article only includes the relatives that are sitting shiva and therefore left out her brother pessach chaim feinstein z’l, her sister rebtz shifra (feinstein) tendler a’h and her daughter chyanne (shisgal) greenfield a’h.

  5. I am horrified that Matzav displays a picture of a woman. What a terrible pritzus and bizayon of Nashim Ztidkanios and accepted Daas Torah.

    In Yiddish GITTEL means TOVA.
I saw somewhere that in English FAYE is like FAITH – confidence, trust, belief …
Is there any connection in Yiddish FAYE to bitachon, emunah, etc?
Even our Rav does not know the meaning in Yiddish of FAYE.
Does anyone know the meaning of FAYE (in Yiddish)?
