A mother in her seventh month of pregnancy was killed and her three children injured, after they were struck by a vehicle as they crossed a street in Rechasim, southeast of Haifa, this evening.
Magen David Adom Carmel crews evacuated the 30-year-old mother, Mrs. Chava Shtudlener, in critical condition, her four-year-old son in serious condition and her two other children, aged three and one-and-a-half, in light condition, to Rambam Hospital in Haifa.
En route to the hospital, MDA crews were able restore a viable heart rhythm for the mother after an extended attempt to resuscitate her. However, after undergoing emergency surgery, in which doctors performed a cesarean delivery to retrieve the fetus, doctors were unable to save the unborn baby or the mother and their death was later pronounced, Channel 2 news reported.
The four-year-old, who suffered severe head trauma, was evacuated to Rambam while he was artificially respirated and in a comatose induced state. He later stabilized, and was downgraded to moderate condition, according to Channel 2 news.
Police which arrived at the scene described the accident as “very severe.” According to initial investigations, the mother crossed the street in an area that was unmarked for pedestrian crossing.
Police said the driver was a 30-year-old resident of Haifa. He was arrested and will be investigated.
