Starting from today, December 1, Erev Shabbos Parshas Vayishlach, onwards, Israeli chevrah kadisha groups will begin to arrange the removal of corpses to mortuaries on Shabbos by non-Jews.

At present, outside chevrah kadisha hours, families need to evacuate corpses by private ambulance at their own expense.

The change is due to a class action suit led by Tova Rogel, who, in 2015, paid $625 to remove the body of her mother, who passed away on Shabbos. Social Security told her that it only paid for such expenses when the removal was implemented by a chevrah kadisha.
