Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, stated to Newsmax that the recent news of former President Donald Trump’s indictment did not come as a surprise.
President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice accuses Trump of mishandling classified documents and obstructing the government’s efforts to retrieve them after he left office.
Comer, in a conversation with Newsmax host Sebastian Gorka, remarked, “I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that on the same day the House Oversight Committee gains access to an FBI form suggesting Joe Biden’s involvement in a bribery scheme, the DOJ moves forward with indicting Donald Trump.” He further emphasized their longstanding concerns about the DOJ and FBI having a two-tiered system of justice.
Earlier that day, the FBI provided an unclassified FD-1023 document to Comer’s committee. Fox News reported that the document alleged a Ukrainian gas company executive had paid then-Vice President Biden $5 million as part of a bribery scheme.
Comer criticized the FBI, stating that they had thoroughly investigated Trump while turning a blind eye to Biden. He mentioned that the committee had reached an agreement to postpone a vote on whether FBI Director Christopher Wray should be held in contempt of Congress, contingent on being able to examine the document and other additional 1023 forms.
He highlighted the contradiction between the FBI’s previous denial of the existence of a form 1023 related to Biden and the revelation of three such forms. Comer underscored that the document received that day was only one among several.
Comer stated that he and committee ranking member Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, would have access to the other two FD-1023 forms. He expressed his belief that a certain shell company and bank account might contain Ukrainian money and vowed to “follow the money” during the committee’s investigation into whether Biden traded influence for financial gain.
Comer contended that it was implausible for President Biden’s son to have orchestrated such deals and moved millions of dollars through shell companies to the Biden family without someone in charge. He claimed that the committee and the FBI informant believed it was Joe Biden.
The chairman also mentioned that the Oversight Committee’s actions impact the U.S. attorney in Delaware, who is leading an investigation into Hunter Biden’s potential tax crimes.
Regarding FBI Director Wray’s future, when asked by Gorka, Comer expressed the view that the FBI needs significant reform and suggested the termination of several high-ranking officials within the organization.
