Asma al-Assad, the British wife of Syria’s ousted president Bashar al-Assad, has reportedly filed for divorce, citing dissatisfaction with her life in Moscow, according to Turkish and Arab media outlets on Sunday. She is said to be seeking to relocate to London.
Asma has filed a request with the Russian court, asking for special permission to leave Moscow. Russian authorities are reportedly reviewing her application.
Born and raised in London by Syrian parents, Asma holds dual British-Syrian nationality, the BBC reported. She moved to Syria in 2000 and married Bashar al-Assad the same year when she was 25 years old.
Although Bashar al-Assad’s asylum application was accepted, he is still facing strict limitations. He is reportedly not allowed to leave Moscow or engage in any political activities.
In addition, Russian authorities have frozen his assets, which include 270 kilograms of gold, $2 billion, and 18 apartments in Moscow.
Reports from Saudi and Turkish media state that Bashar al-Assad’s brother, Maher al-Assad, has not been granted asylum in Russia and is still awaiting a decision on his request. Maher and his family are reportedly under house arrest in Russia.
Bashar al-Assad was ousted in early December following an offensive by rebel forces led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Although HTS is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, the US has decided to lift the $10 million bounty on HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani.
