bmg-smallThe grants range from $101,060 for technology upgrades to classrooms at Rowan University, to $86.3 million to transform a New Jersey Institute of Technology building into a hub for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In all, 176 higher education capital construction projects worth $1.3 billion have been approved, in what Gov. Christie called the first concerted contribution to New Jersey’s higher education infrastructure in decades.

Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood got $10.6 million for two construction projects, including a library and research center. That amount was larger than the $10.2 million for Fairleigh Dickinson, the state’s largest private college.

“Today, we begin a new era of opportunity for New Jersey’s colleges and universities,” the governor said in a statement tonight. “To keep more of our best students in the state and to make our colleges more attractive research partners for industries looking to bring good paying jobs and businesses here, we need modern facilities to remain competitive.”

The projects will be sent to the Legislature for consideration.

Voters in November approved a $750 million construction bond, and the state is making available a nearly equal amount through the Higher Education Capital Improvement Fund, the Higher Education Facilities Trust Fund, the Higher Education Technology Infrastructure Fund and the Higher Education Equipment Leasing Fund.

“Last November, New Jersey voters made the right decision to invest $750 million in improvements for colleges and universities around this state,” Kean said in a statement last night. “Today, the public’s investment is honored by the approval of dozens of projects all over the state that will make colleges more competitive and attractive. These colleges are now charged to offer the most innovative tools for the success of their students, who will ultimately be leaders in New Jersey’s workforce.”

  1. While it is wonderful that a Mosad Torah is getting the money, how is that state and federal dollars can go to religious instruction?

  2. #14 – they do. Much, much, much more, just in shekels/dollars. Nebach that we are kofoi tov to Medinas Yisroel, whether we agree with the government or not. They still sponsor Torah to the tune of millions of dollars.

  3. #14 – for the record, over 1.4 BILLION Shekels were given to Yeshivos this past year. Don’t believe me? Google it!
