Report: Israel’s Shin Bet Tracking Israeli Phones For Over 2 Years

The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) has conducted a classified digital surveillance program monitoring Israeli citizens’ phones in an effort to trace supporters of the Islamic State terrorist group, the Hebrew-language Channel 13 News reported Sunday.

The report comes on the heels of a controversy regarding the Shin Bet’s mass surveillance program aimed at tracking citizens who had contracted the COVID-19 virus and were ordered to undergo quarantine, with critics citing concerns over privacy rights and civil liberties.

However, the phone tracking aimed at flushing out terrorist sympathizers dates back to at least two years prior to the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which hit Israel in March of this year; it was not clear whether it was still ongoing.
