Report: Jimmy Carter Offers to Talk to North Korea’s Kim

Former President Jimmy Carter has reportedly offered to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in an attempt to prevent a war. In a suggestion that implies distrust of President Trump—and the State Department—the 93-year-old Carter allegedly told Park Han-shik, a professor at the University of Georgia, that he would like to discuss a peace treaty with Kim, according to South Korea’s JoongAng Daily. “He wants to employ his experience visiting North Korea to prevent a second Korean War,” Park said.
Carter wrote in the Washington Post last week that the escalating conflict with North Korea represents “the most serious existential threat to world peace.” In 1994, with President Clinton’s blessing, Carter reached a deal to freeze North Korea’s nuclear program with Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung.
