Report: Jordan Considered Downgrading Israel Ties After Netanyahu’s Annexation Promise

Jordan considered denigrating ties with Israel after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a public promise last month to annex the Jordan Valley.

King Abdullah II of Jordan considered the option of recalling the ambassador to Israel, Ghassan Majali, but didn’t follow through in the end, according to a Channel 13 report. King Abdullah II eventually concluded that the Prime Minister’s declaration was merely a pre-election stunt.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi described Netanyahu’s comments as a “dangerous escalation.” According to several analysts, talks of annexation into the West Bank has sparked fears among Jordanians that their country will be an “alternative homeland” for Palestinians once again.
