Stacey Barchenger reports at the Asbury Park Press that Lakewood, NJ, Township manager Thomas Henshaw has resigned unexpectedly after working just more than three years as the top administrator in the municipality of more than 100,000.

Henshaw left the municipal building on Third Street about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, walking to his reserved parking space with papers tucked under his arm. The reason for Henshaw’s resignation is unclear. Mayor Ray Coles declined to say more because it was a “personnel matter.”

One township source, who spoke on the condition that their name not be used because they were not authorized to speak to the media, said Henshaw resigned over what the source described as a misunderstanding about township email records. Henshaw said he thought township staff was being asked to improperly destroy email messages, the source said.
