The United States has demanded North Korea move some of its nuclear warheads out of the country within six months, including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and other nuclear material, Japanese media report according to Reuters.
The Asahi newspaper, citing sources familiar with North Korean issues, also reported that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that Washington would be willing to remove Pyongyang from its list of state sponsors of terrorism if the North ships out the nuclear items. The report comes a day after North Korea cast doubt on whether the summit with Donald Trump will happen. South Korea has offered to act as a “mediator” to smooth out the differences between the U.S. and North Korea. A South Korean official said Thursday the country will “sufficiently convey [to the United States] what we’ve discerned about North Korea’s position and attitude… and sufficiently convey the United States’ position to North Korea” to help ensure the talks do go ahead.
