Syrian President Bashar Assad has left for Russia after Islamist forces captured Damascus, bringing an end to his family’s five decades of authoritarian rule.

Assad, who succeeded his father as president in 2000, reportedly fled Syria early Sunday morning as rebel forces approached his palace. According to Russian state news agency Tass, he landed in Moscow later that day.

Russia, a steadfast ally of the Assad regime, has reportedly offered asylum to the 59-year-old leader and his family. The journey to Moscow was reportedly completed via private jet, according to news reports.

Rebels entered Damascus on Sunday, encountering no resistance from government forces. Gunfire ringing out in the streets primarily came from celebratory volleys as crowds gathered in city squares, waving revolutionary flags and shouting calls for freedom.

Assad’s palace was looted, with rebels seizing lavish items and exposing the excessive lifestyle enjoyed by the Assad family while ordinary Syrians endured years of devastating civil war.

Meanwhile, Moscow has requested an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting to address the unfolding events. Russian media reported that the rebels have assured they will not target Russia’s military bases in Syria.

With Assad’s reign over, the rebels now face the complex challenge of forming a government after 14 years of relentless conflict. Throughout his rule, Assad employed brutal measures similar to those used by his father, Hafez al-Assad, who held power for three decades through oppressive tactics.

Abu Mohammed al-Golani, a former leader of al-Qaeda who claims to have severed ties with the group, leads the most powerful rebel faction and is positioned to assume control of Syria.

In a public address on Sunday, al-Golani characterized Assad’s departure as “a victory to the Islamic nation” and expressed his vision for a Syria where people of diverse faiths and backgrounds could coexist.

Despite the dramatic turn of events in Damascus, Syria’s path to peace remains uncertain.

Rebel factions across the country remain fractured, and fighting persists in the north between Turkey-supported forces and U.S.-backed Kurdish groups. Additionally, remnants of ISIS continue to hold territory.

From Damascus, al-Golani has begun efforts to unify and rally the population. On Sunday, Syrian state television broadcast a rebel statement declaring Assad’s removal, the release of prisoners, and a call to safeguard the institutions of “the free Syrian state.”

Among those freed were inmates from the infamous Saydnaya prison, a facility where human rights organizations have long documented systematic torture and executions of perceived regime opponents. Videos circulating online appear to show rebels opening prison cells, with women and children emerging, visibly dazed.

“This happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of prison and know where is he,” said Bassam Masr, a relative of one detainee. “I have been searching for him for two hours. He has been detained for 13 years.”

Rebel leaders have pledged a new era for Syria, distinct from the Assad regime’s oppressive policies.

“Syria is for everyone, no exceptions. Syria is for Druze, Sunnis, Alawites, and all sects,” declared rebel commander Anas Salkhadi during a televised appearance.

“We will not deal with people the way the Assad family did,” he emphasized.

  1. BARUCH SHEPTARANI! Assad’s terrorist regime has boruch Hashem come to an end. (Wouldn’t be surprised if Trump was behind it unofficially…) even though he declared: ‘The United States Should Stay Out of Syria. This is not our fight. Let it play out!’

The terrorists Bashar Assad, his father and their group of DS criminals were terrorizing their citizens for 58 years! Just because the Leftist media calls them “rebels” doesn’t mean it is so. Ever heard of ‘rebels’ saying they will act with absolute responsibility regarding all military sites and weapons and will be careful that these sites don’t fall into irresponsible hands. STOP FALLING FOR FAKE NEWS PROPAGANDA.

  2. Me thinks Iran and Canada are next.
The leftist Canadian government are seizing all guns from its citizens for Ukraine’s war.
Trump already stated that with the US giving so much financial support to Canada and Mexico, they might as well become states in the US in return.

  3. We need real news, 1. Did he cancel his 2,300 new opthamology appointments (courteous of Qatar). 2) Did he get all 23 of his sleek autos to Moscow?
