If until now it was unclear just how old Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman is, the mystery has been solved with the release of the rosh yeshiva‘s passport, Matzav.com Israel has learned.

The passport was issued in 2008 when Rav Shteinman went on a trip to France and the United States.

According to the passport, Rav Steinman’s year of birth is 1914. The month and day of his birth is not detailed.

In addition, the passport indicates that his birthplace is Poland.

The simple math shows that the rosh yeshiva is now 102 years old. May he merit continued arichus yomim veshonim.

  1. Simple math shows that the rosh yeshiva is 101 or 102, depending on when in the year 1914 he was actually born. If before 09/28, then he’s 102, if after, then he’s 101.

  2. May the Rav be blessed with Arichas Yamim V’Shanim Tovim!
My grandmother held that one should not openly discuss the age of the elderly so as not to make an Ayin Hara.

  3. To ‘Alteh Bucher’, who just asked, “Maybe he wants privacy. who says he wants this info out there?”.
This is important for Trump, who allegedly denied that HaRav Shteinman was actually born in Poland.

  4. With all due respect, I strongly question such posts. You had a post a few days ago along such lines as well.

Chazal teach us that אין לך דבר היפה מן הצניעות. Rashi on Shemos 34:3 says that the luchos rishonos were broken because they were given with great fanfare, which led to עין הרע ר”ל. Therefore Hashem told Moshe to come up alone for the second luchos, with no other man (not even the Kohen gadol or zekeinim).

See also Mishlei 25:2, where it says כבד אלקים הסתר דבר.

Please stop such posts ASAP, and remove those that have already been posted.

    Thanks in advance.

In the zechus of respecting people’s privacy, as well as properly valuing tznius (which is a lot more than just a dress code), we should be zoche to a שנה טובה.

  5. Correction: The Rosh Yeshiva traveled with the Gerrer Rebbe to the US in 1998 to establish the fund to create “Torani” schools for the thousands of children from as-yet secular families who had begun to agree to be enrolled by Lev L’Achim in Torah schools but were having problems being placed in the existing Chinuch Atzmai schools. They arrived in America in time to participate in the levaya of Rav Moshe Sherer z’l and the fund was named Nesivos Moshe to honor Rav Sherer.

Rav Shteinman participated in the inaugural Lakewood Asifa for P’eylim / Lev L’Achim and in a Lev L’Achim event for the Flatbush Sefardic community at the home of Eddie Betesh. Neither he or the Rebbe participated in anything related to Shuvu. Perhaps the misconception was born out of the fact that Mr. Abe Biderman, the renowned leader of Shuvu, served as the host for Rav Shteinman in Boro Park.

  6. Bli Ayin Hora. He should have arichas Yamim Tovim.

That said, I do recall people worrying over discussing the ages of gedolim, for ayin hora reasons

  7. Why is this a news story?

Also, why would Matzav publish something that could create an ayin hara on one of the gedolei hador?

Also, ayin hara’s aside, this is a private detail in someone’s life. What benefit is there in divulging it?

  8. AGREED!

IF ONLY PEOPLE WERE AS MACHSHIV HIS SEFORIM UPON RELEASE AS HIS PASSPORT

    INAPROPRAITE AND UNECEESSARY!

WE DONT NEED MORE AYIN HARAS IN THE WORLD!

  9. Why is this not a breach of this Gadol HaDor’s personal privacy? This would be true of any person who was not first asked if they can reveal this information, how much more so with a Gadol! Whoever leaked the passport did a disservice to Rav Shteinman and I’m surprised that Matzav published this.

  10. I once saw an elderly Irishman running for a bus. As he was running, he declared, “I’m 95 years old.”

    “Kenohara,” I said.

“How did you know my name?” he asked me.

  11. Did he ask, or at the least allow, this to be posted?
The ID number was blacked out, so should the date of birth unless he asked / allowed otherwise.

And I suppose most of us, ordinary gentlemens and ladies (the latter, even more so) would be quite upset and annoyed should our passport be posted on the internet. Hey, was not there recently a privacy breach? With Ms Obama’s passport being posted in public? I think those who did were called hackers not to say criminals and those were the nicest words.

  12. Why is it that the passport doesn’t say the month & date of his birth ? What kinda passport is that ? Its not worth much if there is no Month & date ? The issue here is, is that the passport itself is missing very important info !! So how is it possible this passport is even valid ? Its incomplete, very strange !! Also I’m sure Rav Shteinman has his original papers from when he was born or knows his date of birth at least in the Hebrew Month & date, but then again we are talking about over 100 years ago, how much info was really kept ? They probably had to take his word bec, it was after the war, who kept documents after a war ? Could be many reasons, but at least he should tell the Isreali Government what his real age is, sorry if no date & month, what’s the point ?
