Mitt Romney ridiculed President Barack Obama for his “awfully European” economic policies at a town hall this morning, using the May unemployment report to beat up on the White House.
“Barack Obama has failed America,” Romney said, repeating a line from his announcement speech Thursday. “And so today, three years into his term, we have more news that unemployment has ticked up again.”
The Labor Department reported Friday that unemployment had risen to 9.1 percent in May, just a few minutes before Romney began his first New Hampshire town hall of the 2012 cycle here in Manchester.
Romney gave the president for having “tried” to help the country recover, but said Obama had instead “extended the downturn and made it deeper” through un-American economic policies.
“When the Europeans were in trouble economically, they spent more money and they borrowed more money. That’s just what he did,” Romney said. “He has been awfully European. You know what? European policies don’t work there. They sure…aren’t going to work here.”
“I believe in capitalism. I believe in the Constitution,” he continued. “And I believe in the greatness of America.”
