Ron Paul: Israel Can Take Care Of Itself

ron-paulSetting himself far apart from his Republican colleagues, Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul on Tuesday night suggested that the U.S. should have less involvement in Israel’s affairs.

“I think they’re quite capable of taking care of themselves,” he said.

The statement came in response to a question in a Tuesday night debate about whether the GOP candidates would, as president, support Israel in an attack against Iran.

Paul responded that he wouldn’t expect such an attack to take place — but if it were to, “Why does Israel need our help? We need to get out of their way.”

The United States sends roughly $3 billion to Israel in military assistance every year.

If they were to conduct such an attack, “that’s their business, but they should suffer the consequences,” Paul continued. He added that Israel has hundreds of nuclear missiles, so “they can take care of themselves.”

Paul pointed to Egypt as an example of foreign intervention that can go awry. The U.S. has sent billions to Egypt only to see a government begin to emerge this year that will be less friendly to Israel, he said.

By contrast, businessman Herman Cain said he would help Israel in such an attack “if the mission and the plan were clear.”

“If Israel had a credible plan that it appeared as if they could succeed, I would support Israel, yes,” he said. “And in some instances, depending upon how strong the plan is, we would join with Israel for that, if it was clear what the mission was and it was clear what the definition of victory was.”

Cain added, however, that coming up with a credible plan would be unlikely because Iran “is a very mountainous region” and it’s unclear where it’s nuclear development sites are located.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich later said he would only bomb Iranian nuclear sites if it led to regime change.

  1. The comparison of foreign aid to Egypt and Israel is ridiculous. Israel is a western democracy. Ron Paul is a whacko. If you vote for him, so are you.

  2. you don’t understand what ron paul is saying, he is giving Israel a free hand to do whatever they want as there business. that is the greatest favor for israel.

All America’s help has backfired on Israel, with all the aid money that was given to Egypt, they have there a powerful army and utter chaos.

whats any of the worth of America supporting Israel if they keep it on a leash, and support there enemies as well.

  3. I understand exactly what Ron Paul is saying now, and what he has been saying this whole election cycle. You think any of the other Republican candidates would give Israel any less of a carte blanche in dealing with Iran? They might or might not help in a given scenario, but every single one would let Israel attack Iran if Israel felt that it was in its best interests to do so.

None of these candidates will keep Israel on as short a leash as Obama has. Egypt was not an enemy before the Arab spring. In fact, it was a strategic counterweight in the region to the real enemies, such as Iran. America has made sure that Israel keeps its military advantage for decades. And the military financial aid is very important.

Ron Paul’s statement that Israel has nuclear weapons so it can take care of itself is superficial and ridiculous (like most of what he says). Does Israel want to be forced to actually use its nuclear arsenal? Is that good for anyone in the region or the world?

And again, comparing foreign aid to Israel and Egypt is absurd. Israel is a western democracy, not a dictatorship with an unhappy population, not the home to anti-American Islamist extremists. How do you compare the wisdom in aiding the two countries?

  4. he wants to stop ALL foreign aid to all countries, this includes Israel it also includes the west bank Egypt, and China who we borrow money from.

His point is that if America were to stop policing the world. A job that they have done since world war two, we would be in much better shape.

We would be better shape financially as well in U.S standings in the rest of the world. There is a reason that the whole world hates Americas imperialistic views.

Case in point Americas building a “defense program” for the EU only causes a counter measure from Russia, potentially spiraling into another cold war.

If America wouldn’t take care of so many countries arming them etc’, we wouldn’t have the problems to begin with.

We have armed and trained so many terror groups for some immediate gain, only having it later turn on the U.S and then needing to clean it up. Better take care of your own country to begin with.

Another point, Ron Paul’s theories whether good or bad are constitutional which is his main point. It in unconstitutional to make a war without congress consenting. (for this reason America has not officially been at war since world war two despite the almost nonstop wars that they fight).

He will not and he cannot decide not to go to war with Iran if congress declares war. A president does not have the power and should not have a power to make a war.

(A similar idea is seen li’havdil in Torah that a king cannot go to war without the sanhedrin deciding, this all the more true with a president, who gives one person the right to send American men and women to war through an executive order)

The same holds true with giving your tax dollars to other countries. Giving money away without money coming back is one of the most crippling things to the economy.

Ron Paul is the most American Constitutional president, but most of us can’t see past our shallow world view that helping means getting involved etc’.
