Rabbi Dovid Boaron, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Kibbutz Givat Ze’ev, says one of his talmidim is still struggling to recover after spending five days in military detention following his arrest as a draft evader.

Speaking in an interview with Kol Chai, Rabbi Boaron recounted the recent arrest of Reuven Lamenatzeach, a student at the yeshiva who was detained while returning from a family event.

According to the rosh yeshiva, undercover officers stopped the bochur on Highway 1 and quickly discovered that he had been classified as a draft evader.

“When they saw that he was a draft evader, they immediately identified him. Unfortunately, they did not even allow him to make a phone call to his parents. They immediately took him away in handcuffs,” Rabbi Boaron said.

Although Lamenatzeach was released after only five days—a relatively short period compared to some similar cases—Rabbi Boaron said the experience left a deep impact on the young man.

“He came out broken. There is a lot of humiliation that people go through there,” the rosh yeshiva said.

Relaying what the bochur told him after his release, Rabbi Boaron described difficult conditions in both detention and military prison. He said the student slept on a thin mattress placed on the floor, had limited opportunities for tefillah, and faced challenging living conditions.

“The hardest part, he said, was the humiliation. If a shirt was slightly out, there were immediate punishments. These are things a ben Torah is not accustomed to.”

Rabbi Boaron added that the bochur was housed together with Bedouin detainees and encountered circumstances that were entirely unfamiliar to him.

“He told me, ‘I would not wish this on anyone.’”

The rosh yeshiva said that although the detention lasted less than a week, its effects remain evident.

“Today he has already returned to the yeshiva, but I see that the bochur is still not fully here. It will take time for him to recover from the experience.”

Following his release, Lamenatzeach visited several gedolim to receive encouragement and guidance.

Rabbi Boaron said that during a visit with Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman, the message was simple and repeated several times.

“Do not be afraid, do not be afraid.”

According to the rosh yeshiva, Rav Bergman emphasized those words repeatedly in an effort to strengthen the young man’s spirits.

The bochur later visited Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, where the conversation turned to a friend who had been with him during the incident but was not arrested.

“He asked whether the friend was Ashkenazi, and when they answered that he only looked Ashkenazi, he replied with a smile, ‘No, it is important that he is Ashkenazi.’”

Rabbi Boaron also shared details about how that friend managed to avoid arrest.

“He started talking with the officers about the draft, chatted with them for a bit, and then simply took off and left,” the rosh yeshiva said, describing the escape as another miracle that occurred that night.

During the interview, Rabbi Boaron also discussed the growth of the institutions under his leadership in Givat Ze’ev. He said the local cheder now serves nearly 300 students and that the yeshiva, founded approximately two years ago, operates three daily learning sessions with a strong emphasis on intensive Torah study.

Concluding the interview, Rabbi Boaron expressed concern that additional arrests of yeshiva students may lie ahead.

“This is only the beginning,” he said. “If there is no Torah, there is no derech eretz and there is no state.”

  1. nothing at all compared to chayalim who lose limbs or have PSD because they were mekayaim the mitzvah of defending Am Yisroel.

    • Losing Yiddishkeit is killing the boy for generations.

Could you show me which of the 613 mitzvos is “the mitzvah of defending Am Yisroel”? Do those chayalim keep the mitzvah of Shabbos, a mitzvah in the Aseres Hadibros, the 10 Commandments? Do they keep the mitzvah prohibiting women from serving in combat units?

      • They sure do. There are thousands of bachurei Yeshivat Hesder who all that and more, including learning in their tanks.
Are you kidding? Lo Sa’amod Al Dam Re’echa is 1 for starters. Ki Seitzei L’Milchama … it says you should actually have the most spiritually included people in the army

    • Unfortunately, the chayalim suffer injury, PTSD, and death to the incredibly poor management by the top-brass.

Most of the incidents could’ve been prevented by decent strategizing.

(The commanders on the ground and their soldiers are not to blame; it’s the top-brass in Tel Aviv. And certain high-ranking individuals in the Gaza Division prior to October 7, 2023.)

Just as one of many examples, Commander of the Air Force Tomer Bar, who sits in his comfy office in Tel Aviv regularly nullified the orders of General Yaniv Asor of the Southern Command in the middle of battles.

General Asor confronted General Bar about this, yet Bar remained unrepentant.

General Bar also prioritized Gazan “civilians” over the lives of Israeli soldiers during his entire career. He basically sacrificed Jewish lives to avoid killing terrorists.

That’s the real reason behind the massive amounts of soldier deaths, crippling injuries, and PTSD.

  2. Sir, with all due respect, you have it backwards…
““If there is no Torah, there is no derech eretz and there is no state.”
the saying is Derech Eretz Kadma LeTorah. If there is no derech eretz, there is no Torah.
And since these boys have no idea what derech eretz is, by blocking roads on a regular basis,
I dont think their learning amounts to much.

    • You are way out of line. This bochur and probably the case with most these bochurim arrested had nothing to do with going out and participating in afgonas and blocking roads and causing mayhen and yes a chilul H-shem. Almost in all these cases they arrested real chosheve young Bnei Torah (the cream of the cake) and it’s heartbreaking to watch. But of course you have an agenda because you are anti Yeshiva and anti Torah (probably got kicked out of yeshiva in 9th grade) and so you’ll use every chance that you have to bash bnei Torah and yeshivaleit. What a miserable life you must have!

    • If not for these holy protests, Israel would look like other non-Jewish country. You need to pray for these boys to continue being successful in their road blocking.

    • He does not “have it backwards”; you are simply ignorant and hateful. There is zero indication that this boy ever attended any protest and, regardless he knows the Torah far better than you.

  3. The main military prison (Keleh 6) is decent for regular soldiers, except for the female wardens who scream and insult and humiliate them at every opportunity. (They’re supposed to do this, as being screamed at by a female is supposed to be more humiliating. And then these young women are released into regular society, but with these appalling behaviors still ingrained.)

But in addition to these banshees who shriek at everyone, the yeshivah boys there undergo rejection and derision from staff and other inmates who looked down on them as draft-dodgers.

The organization that helps the bochurim constantly call the public phones there asking whether new bochurim arrived, and the soldier inmates answer by cursing them and slamming down the phone.

I heard all this directly from a soldier who was there.

  4. Ok, now its my turn to respond to those who have decided to attack me. First, I will address @cool_masmid. You call me anti yeshiva, anti torah, etc. Listen up, you. No, I did not get kicked out of yeshiva (EVER). I attended the same well known yeshiva my whole life. Do you know for a fact that this boy didnt attend hafganot (it’s called hafgana, not afgona)? And exactly what is my agenda? I was of age during the vietnam war. We all had to sign up with the Selective service. It was the law of the land. If the law is to register (and in Israel, you can get a ptur from service), well, theres something called dina demalchusa dina. To sum up, your attack was uncalled for and think about it come yom kippur, because I will not be mochel you. And by the way, its cream of the crop, not cream of the cake.
Next to @anonymous who calls them holy protests and wished them success. Let me tell you something. I have elderly relatives in Yerushalayim who need to get to doctors. If chas vesholom, one of them dies because of these riots, thats holy?
And lastly to @MOrbach, yes I am a sabra. My parents moved to Israel in 1949, broken after the war where they lost most of their families (Most on my fathers side, All on my mothers side). I am proud of being a sabra and proud to see what a beautiful country was built where thousands of people can learn torah. Ive lost a first cousin in the army. They are proud to defend the country.
