Rav Avrohom Yehoshua Soloveitchik, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Brisk in Yerushalayim, has long been known to be anti-demonstrations and acts of false kannaus (zealotry).

On Motzoei Shabbos, Rav Soloveitchik against spoke out against those engaged in continuous acts of protests that they call “kanna’us,” whether against the Israeli government or others.

The remarks were made at a shiur delivered at his home at 4 Rechov Shimon Hamacabbi in Yerushalayim.

“Regarding Lot, the Torah says that people came from all corners of the city to see who the visitors were and to take action and demonstrate and protest against him. They were all there.” He continued: “In general, kannaim are individuals. When everyone comes, it’s for a different reason, not kanna’us. After all, they were the people of Sedom, wicked people.”

The rosh yeshiva gave an example: “In [Yerushalayim of old,] a city full of chareidim, it was known that not all of them were kanna’im l’sheim Shomayim, but there was one who was known for his zealotry, and that was Rav Amram Blau, who was a yochid, an individual, who went to protest against the establishment.

“But today, we see that there is a big group coming out to demonstrate. It is for certain that it is not kanna’us that speaks to them. There is probably another reason…”
