Roshei Yeshivos: Farhers for Yeshiva Gedolah to Begin on 19 Tammuz

For the first time in the Sephardic Torah world, the heads of major Israeli yeshivos gathered specifically to reinforce the issue of farhers this year, signing a document stating that farhers for yeshivos gedolos won’t begin before the 19th of Tammuz.

It will be recalled that for many years, it was customary to hold farhers of mesivta bochurim for yeshivos gedolos at the end of the month of Tammuz in order to prevent a yeridah at the end of the summer zeman. However, a few years ago, farhers began being given immediately after Shavuos, which led to a loosening in yeshivos and disrupting the continuity of the learning.

Following this, it was determined that farhers for yeshivos gedolos would take place only after 19 Tammuz. The mesivtos have come together to agree not to make exceptions to this rule.

The special gathering of the roshei yeshiva of the major Israeli Sephardic yeshivos was arranged for them to sign a joint document on the subject. The event was held at the Be’er Avraham Hall in Givat Shaul in Yerushalayim.

  1. Uhhhh, what?
Yeshiva Gedola in Israel starts at 18. You’re telling me that 18-year-olds are “letting loose” after getting accepted in Yeshivah Gedolah because they feel they don’t need to work anymore as their place is assured? So after 15 years (from pre-k and on) of being taught that Limmud Torah is the most important thing in the world (which it is) and that they must sacrifice all for learning, they still drop it all once they feel they made it?

    Sad.

    • Nice to see how Matzav practices active censorship of everything but their own stuff.
My original message had a section that placed blame for this situation at the feet of the Yeshiva world. But instead of responding (yes, Matzav’s editors do respond once in a blue moon), it’s easier to just slice off the sentence and ignore what many in the community are saying and thinking.
