rav-shteinman1Following calls by gedolei Yisroel, including HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv and HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman shlita, roshei yeshivos are issuing appeals to parents to safeguard their sons and remain alert to various spiritual dangers that lurk during bein hazmanim, such as tainted communications devices, including Internet perils and self-styled “chareidi” websites. They also cautioned against unsupervised trips and renting rooms in the North.

In a notice headed, “Amoleinu Eilu Habonim,” gedolei Yisroel warned about the perils and snares to be avoided during the Nisan yeshiva break.

“We have heard about the terrible breach in which bochurim from upstanding families rent rooms in hostels, hotels and cabins in the Tiberius area and the North, where they have access to impure devices and unconscionable things and [in certain instances] came to the point of terrible stumbling-blocks, may Hashem spare us. Yeshiva students rented rooms for rest and relaxation and were unable to overcome the test, and they stumbled and declined demonstrably.

“Parents must be alert to the dangers and exhibit foresight and stand guard, not allowing their sons to set out on trips. If there is a real necessity they should take part in organized trips with proper supervision to prevent spiritual and physical dangers.”

The letter is signed by both HaRav Eliashiv and HaRav Shteinman shlita.

  1. Sorry, learning torah full time in yeshiva is not babysitting, it is character building, infusing the yeshiva boy with a thirst for Torah and creating a rock solid foundation for yiras shamayim. If a few days of vacation in Tverya Ir Hakodesh is too much for them to handle, the yeshivas are failing miserably in their task.

  2. Vakel:

The daughters live at home, the way young people should, so they are taught their parents’ hashkafahs and see their example.

The boys are sent away to raise each other in dormitories with no family to influence and protect them. Therefore they are weaker in their hashkafos. Let the boys live at home where the parents can teach and control them, and you will have less craziness in general.

BTW, the stories I have heard about and from American bochrim who go to EY to learn and live unsupervised in apartments would give any parent nightmares. Kids can’t raise themselves. They need their parents’ supervision – their parents, and not some part-time in-the-dorm “mashgiach.”
