lipToday, the sentencing hearings began in the case of Reb Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Judge Linda Reade ruled that the final sentencing will be postponed for several weeks.

Reb Sholom Mordechai, a former Agriprocessors Inc. manager who has been the victim of overhandedness by prosecutors and bias by the presiding judge, faces a possible – but unprecedented – life sentence for counts of fraud.

Despite the postponement, a massive atzeres tefillah for men and women on behalf of Reb Sholom Mordechai ben Rivkah will take place at Bais Faiga Hall.

A minyan for Maariv will take place at 9:45 p.m., followed by divrei hisorerus at 10 p.m. sharp.  The gathering will be addressed by Rav Aryeh Malkiel Kotler, rosh yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha, and Rav Pinchos Lipschutz, publisher of the Yated Ne’eman newspaper, who has been intimately involved in assisting Reb Sholom Mordechai during this ordeal.

Tehillim will then be recited and the event will conclude at 10:30 p.m.

She is trying to torture him………..

Not necessarily: in the light of all the publicity surrounding this case she could be reconsidering the sentence she planned to hand down.

  3. “torture him” ? I don’t think so. She cannot reduce the sentence demanded by the prosecuters right now without appearing to yield to pressure from those who publicly commented about the perversion of justice. She claims she came into possession of new information that she needs to study and factor into the case. Hopefully, she will reduce R’ Shalom’s sentence to what other people got for similar violations, disregarding the prosecutors’ wicked recommendations. Hashem is giving us a chance to do some special mitzva to benefit R. Shalom during these three wks.

  4. Rabosai, this is a message from Hashem to us. The amazing unity and compassion in our community the last few days has hit s/t! I don’t want to bring up old memories of machlokes etc, but what is happening now, the Achdus that this shows in klal yisroel is certainly hitting a point in shamayim. We alll know why the BHM”K was destroyed, perhaps we are seeing the beginning of our redemption! Lets keep up the good work! For SMR and for us as well… How can this not have an affect in shamayim? We are in for good times again.

  5. Scary does anybody with law credentials have any insight on this matter why would they postpone a case of a person they alreay delayed thing over two years now what. Lets beg Hashem to remove this gzar din because otherwise its very scary for all us yidden in America

  6. we should not become lax now in the tehillim and shmiras haloshon that we all took on! May it be a zchus and we should hear good news!

  7. I don’t know what is in the judge’s head nor does it really matter. However we can use the time to increase in teshuva and maasim tovim and intensify achdus and ahavas yisroel and increase learning tora.Let us daven and hope that it will be mekuyam what the gemoro says BAS DINA BOTUL DINA,a judgement that sleeps (i.e.postponed) will be nullified.AMEN KEIN YEHI RATZON

  8. #3 heart…..not hart…sorry.. Iknow it’s irrelevant in light of the postponement….but for those of you who do not know how to spell…please use a dictionary when writing. It just doesn’t look good…it’s embarrassing.
Most computers have spell check….use it.

  9. Why is the first thought a negetive one? And you are ready to bashmutz her? Doesn’t look very good from our end! From what I heard, she has received information that sheds new light on the case and she wants to review the whole thing and needs time for it.Actually, I think it is in favor of him and she does not want to hand down the sentence without review. This sounds like it bodes well for him and that Hashem will accept our tefillos.
Let us continue being mispallel for him, and in the zechus of the achdus klal yisroel has shown…the ruling will be overturned ….at least for a much shorter sentence than expected.
    Keep up the tefillos!

  10. To all the people who comment on Matzav: Please be careful how you express yourself. This is an open forum for expression and we are not the only ones tuning in to this and reading….We have to consider how we express our frustration…the terms we use and how we translate our anger into words.
We should also be aware of the circumstances and events before we comment on things and to make sure we know what we are saying, otherwise, those tuning in and reading the comments ….well…what should I say…As a frum, chassidish person..I am sometimes amazed at the words and expressions used and the lack of derech eretz shown in terms of language usage.
We are supposed to be a light onto the nations, sometimes…many times…it seems, we have totally lost sight of that!
    People read us…..
Please express yourself with derech eretz befitting your status…”A PRIESTLY NATION”…”THE CHOSEN ONES”.
    THANK YOU.

  11. I think this is a great thing. Whenever something not good gets postponed, it is a sign of Hashem giving US more time to change the decree. A sign that we have to work BIGGER and HARDER to free this man, who represents ALL OF US!!!

  12. Please don’t let the passage of time, slow down the tremendous Tefillos that have been going on the past couple of days.
Just think if each Tefillah of each person can knock off a bit of the sentence, how great is it that we have a few more weeks to daven.

  13. It’s interesting to note that all the yidden in prison that we’ve tried to help recently weren’t. The asifos are great, but then some people returns to the blogs spewing sinah about every topic under the sun. The time to wake up is now, Rabosai. The Nazis yemach shmom vzichrom did not care what kind of Jews we were, and neither should we. Ahavas Yisroel. That is the essence of klal Yisroel. We must act accordingly.

  14. It seems that regardless of the outcome, there are enough grounds to demand a retrial. Have emunah, chevra, Sholom will be restored to his former heights, and even higher.

  15. Many years ago I gave a speech at my 8th grade graduation. It went as follows: In our own midst ever so often a young man or woman raised without a whisper of torah or tradition turn to our age old faith for a lifetime of loyalty; or in countries where people haven’t the freedom to worship, people risk severe persecution in order to observe torah u’mitzvos with such meticulousness. This is the legacy of our forefathers. …Thank you for allowing me to share that with you today. I hope we can rise above our pettiness of today, and restore our glory of yesteryear. Amen.
