Marco Rubio cannot definitively say whether he will serve out an entire six-year Senate term should he win re-election to his current seat. “No one can make that commitment because you don’t know what the future’s gonna hold in your life personally or politically,” the Florida senator and failed Republican presidential candidate told CNN this week, suggesting he will consider another presidential run in 2020.

Moments later, however, Rubio seemingly shut down the suggestion he’d seek the highest office in the land again: “I can commit to you this, and that is that if I am running to be a U.S. senator, I am fully prepared to allow the U.S. Senate to be the last political office I ever hold.” Before entering the 2016 presidential primary, Rubio said he would leave politics if he failed to reach the White House, only to reverse that statement and seek re-election for his Senate seat.
