giuliani2Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the only potential 2012 candidate who would be legal to perform same-gender marriages under the New York law that passed last week, walked a delicate line in his first public comments on the topic, per the Daily News politics blog:

“My thoughts are that I’m glad that people who felt discriminated against have sort of had that burden of discrimination lifted. I signed the first civil-union, domestic partnership bill I think in the country. Maybe it was the second. And I still take a lot of criticism for that,” said 2008 GOP presidential hopeful Giuliani at Joe Torre’s Safe at Home Foundation golf outing at Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor.

“I still state that marriage is being defined between a man and a woman, but I can truly understand what people are striving for. And as someone who signed civil unions and domestic partnerships, that’s probably my preference,” Giuliani said, according to Peter Botte.

“But I was very glad to see people relieved of this burden of discrimination, which is a terrible thing to feel…

“And I think Gov. Cuomo deserves a lot of credit. Even if you don’t agree with the result, it showed a lot of leadership to execute the result. For the first time in a long time, we’re seeing leadership at the gubernatorial level in New York, including expenses and a lot of systematic control of government and I think that’s a good sign for a lot of other things the governor can do.”

Giuliani explicitly voiced his feelings about marriage as “between a man and a woman” in his 2008 presidential run, when he was courting conservative activists.

As he said, he signed a break-through civil unions bill when he was mayor.

  1. Why does he ‘disappoint’? From a legal perspective, it is discrimination. Last I checked, Rudy and others who support same gender initiatives are driven by legal factors and not by religious ideologies. He isn’t frum, so why wouldn’t he support it?. If I wasn’t frum, I would vote the same way.

  2. He does not disapoint myself. I think thats great. Good for him. He speaks with the times. What is disapointing is a backward thought process by the daily Jewish News Services. That is disapointing. Good for Rudy. The first intelligent comment in a while.

  3. For the past couple of years I have been meaning to ask, “Who is this guy and what did he do with the real Rudy Giuliani?”

  4. He is a flip-flopper, like Cuomo, checks the wind and then decides. He endorsed Mario Cuomo, now he praises Cuomo Jr., no big surprise.

Giuliani flopped when he ran for Pres. last time around, he will do so again this time if he tries. If you are a flip-flopper, you flop. We need a leader, not a follower, ?? ???? ???? ???? ?????. Good bye Rudy as you become more and more irrelevant.

Rudy and Andrew are quite similar, by ethnic background, and by how they act. Rudy was living in sin, now Andrew is, so naturally they go from one sin to the next, now they go along with toeivah ‘rights’, the new fad. Feh!

If someone is not connected to religion they become vulnerable to being convinced by the phony liberal arguments out there.

  5. Rudy has ALWAYS been a social liberal. He is only conservative on security and crime. Otherwise he has always been a New York liberal. No surprises here!
